Dr. Jingdong LUO received his BSc from Nankai University (1992) and PhD from Wuhan University (2000). He was a postdoc at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 2000 to 2001. He then moved to US, and transformed his research career from a postdoc, to a senior research scientist, and to a principle investigator and entrepreneur at the University of Washington and Soluxra in Seattle, Washington. He joined City University of Hong Kong in summer 2017.

Dr. LUO's research focuses on materials chemistry, supramolecular assembly and processing control of organic functional materials and their inorganic hybrid systems for photonics and electronics, with emphasis on gaining fundamental understanding of structure-property relationship and device engineering, exploring novel physical properties, and achieving significant performance improvement of these materials over state-of-the-art systems. The figure below illustrates his strategy in the research of organic functional materials enabling advanced photonic technologies.

Among the themes of his research are organic materials chemistry, near-infrared molecular photonics, organic nonlinear optics, polymer chemistry, surface chemistry, organic semiconductors, and materials/devices toward printable and flexible electronics and photonics for emerging technologies of data communication and computation, phototheranostics, clean energy, and sensing applications. His major scientific achievements include supramolecular engineering of organic nonlinear optical materials for low driven voltage modulators, efficient pyroelectric poling of organic/polymeric dielectric materials, high performance electro-optic polymers for CPU CMOS and silicon photonic platforms, and aggregation induced emission (AIE) mechanism for OLED and sensing applications

Published 319 papers from 2000 to 2021 with 15,091 citations and an h-index of 60 by SCOPUS, from wide-spread research areas of Organic Materials Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Physics, Optics and Engineering. Dr. LUO has been listed among the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists by a team of experts led by Professor John Ioannidis of Stanford University, reflecting his excellent research performance in the areas of optics and optoelectronics.
