Biography

Prof. Santiago Alonso graduated from CEU Cardenal Herrera University (Spain) in 2015. He then completed an equine rotating internship in Canada, followed by an equine surgical internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute (USA). Seeking to expand his expertise, he pursued a three-year residency in equine practice in the United Arab Emirates, culminating in his successful completion of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) Board Examination in Equine Practice in 2021.

Following his residency, he worked in private equine practice in Scotland, providing ambulatory services with a special focus on orthopedic conditions. His academic journey continued with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice with focus in Equine Lameness Diagnosis and Therapeutics from Liverpool University.

In 2022, he joined the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) at the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, City University of Hong Kong. His work in veterinary education has been instrumental in integrating AI-driven learning methodologies into clinical teaching, focusing on team-based learning strategies and AI-enhanced assessment frameworks. In recognition of his commitment to education and research, he later obtained a Master of Arts in Higher Education and Research and a Master of Science in 2025, further enhancing his expertise in pedagogy and clinical research methodologies.

Prof. Alonso is a CityU Digital Learning Ambassador and has been invited to present at global veterinary and animal health workshops, including events organized by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Asian Association of Veterinary Colleges (AAVC). His ongoing research focuses on AI in Education and veterinary Sciences.


Research Interests

Prof. Alonso's research explores the impact of AI-driven education in veterinary medicine, particularly in clinical decision-making and student performance evaluation. His work also focuses on interactive and adaptive learning strategies, veterinary communication technologies, and the integration of AI-assisted diagnostic tools in equine practice.
