The “Smart Sponge” developed by Prof KO and his team is a highly selective oil-absorbing sponge that can be utilized in various applications, such as aquaculture filtering systems, household grease cleaning, and oil spill cleanup efforts in both marine and freshwater environments. The innovative sponges are prepared by chemical modification of the commercially available sponges. The chemical modification developed by Prof. Ko can be applied to a wide range of materials, allowing the production of polymer-based or plant-based “Smart Sponge”. The latter option is more environmentally friendly and completely bio-degradable.
Both types of “Smart Sponge” can be reused more than 100 times and all chemicals in the chemical modification used in enhancing the oil absorbing feature are biodegradable, making the Smart Sponge a cost-effective and sustainable solution for oil waste treatment, oil spill cleanup, and other related applications. Wood-based Smart Sponge can absorb oil up to 12-15 times of its weight, and over 90% of the absorbed oil can be recovered and recycled.
From a local crayfish farm application using the Smart Sponge, the cost of removing oil contaminants is reduced by more than 20%, and at the same time, the survival rate of the crayfish has increased by more than 30%, providing significant economic and environmental benefits.
The R&D project, “Smart Sponge”, has been selected in the press preview at InnoCarnival 2023.
