Description
All the sinks and floor drains in the lab areas on Floors 1, 2 and 4 of Yeung Kin Man Academic Building are connected by piping down to the Neutralization Plant, which is installed on the basement of the same building. The liquid waste is piped into one of the two fibre glass storage tanks (12m3 litres capacity each) alternatively. A water level controller inside each of the tanks controls the inlet motorized valve's open and close action, which in turn controls the liquid waste feeding into the tank. At any one time, only one tank will accept liquid waste. When a tank is filled up, its' inlet motorized valve will be closed and its' pH control stage will start. Meanwhile, the inlet motorized valve of the other tank will be open to accept wastewater.

Depending on the pH level of the wastewater, either sulphuric acid or sodium hydroxide will be dosed into the fibre glass storage tank by chemical dosing pumps, until the pH value reached the pre-set value of the 6.2~7.9 on the pH controller. The dosing of the chemicals is entirely automatic and controlled by a micro-processor controller. An agitator installed inside the tank is used for mixing the wastewater with the dosing chemicals. The chemical dosing system includes the pH level sensors installed inside the storage tanks, pH controller in the control panel, chemical dosing pumps, chemical storage tanks and feed pipes. All these are housed inside the neutralization plant room.

After the pH value is settled steadily at the pre-set value of 6.2~7.9, the neutralized wastewater will be discharged into the sewer by effluent pumps.

A sump pit with two submersible pumps has been provided inside the plant room to collect any water and/or chemicals overflow from the storage tanks, cleaning of floor and equipment; etc. The wastewater so collected will be fed into the storage tanks for neutralization before discharging to public sewer.

In cases when the Neutralization Plant is broken down due to either equipment failure, lack of dosing chemicals for neutralization purposes, piping leakage, etc., discharge of any wastewater into the system at very short notice.
