Marking Shenzhen University's 20th anniversary, Professor (Chair) Peter Malanczuk of CityU's School of Law was invited by Dean Xinping Ye of the College of Law to deliver a lecture on CEPA, 15 November, at the special Joint Conference held by the International Law Society of Guangdong Province and the Society of Law of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
A new, fast-track, graduate-entry Juris Doctor (JD) programme and a restructured four-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme for the 2004-05 academic year have been launched. These initiatives answer recommendations raised in a 2001 report on legal education reform in Hong Kong and cater to growing aspirations among non-law graduates to enter the legal profession.
H.E. Mr Shotaro Oshima, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva, honoured CityU with a visit to the WTO Dispute Resolution Centre (WTODR), accompanied by Consul (Economic Section) Daisaku Sugihara of the Consulate-General of Japan. This was the fourth visit by WTO representatives to the WTODR.
"It's the first legal text written and compiled by Western academics with China's law reform in mind," said Professor Mike McConville, Dean of the CityU's School of Law (SLW), at the book launch of the English Criminal Justice Process, in Beijing on 11 April. "The book gives a comprehensive account of the structure of criminal justice in England and related issues," he added. "We hope it will contribute .... "
Mr C Raj Kumar, Deputy Director of City University's WTO Law and Dispute Resolution Centre and lecturer in the School of Law, has been awarded a research grant by Japan's Sumitomo Foundation. Mr Kumar's grant was in the category of Fiscal 2002 Grant for Japan-Related Research Projects. The title of his research topic is: "Corruption and Human Rights-Promoting Transparency in Governance in Hong Kong, Japan and India".
A centre that is unique in the Asia-Pacific region has been established at City University. The School of Law's WTO Law and Dispute Resolution Centre (WTODR Centre), launched in January 2002, is distinctive because it focuses not only on World Trade Organization (WTO) law but also on trade and commercial dispute resolutions and the links between the two, according to Centre Director Professor Peter Malanczuk.
CityU staff and students continue to make strides in their scholarships and studies. Below is a sample of the latest research grants and awards they received in the past few months.
City University's School of Law presented a wide range of degree programmes at the Law Fair 2003 held in the Exhibition Centre of the China Resources Building on 15 February. CityU, the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Law, and 17 major law firms participated in the Fair, which was a comprehensive exhibition of law-related study and career opportunities. Law firms taking part included Deacons, Clyde and Co, Stephenson Harwood and Lo, Denton Wilde Sapte, and Linklaters.
City University's WTO Law & Dispute Resolution (WTODR) Centre received its third important visitor from the WTO, Mr Evan Rogerson, Director of the WTO Council and Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) Division, on 12 March 2003.
