Kernel-based Approximation for Well-posed and
Ill-posed Problems

ABSTRACT: In this talk the idea of meshless computational methods based on the use of kernel-based functions for solving various well-posed and ill-posed problems will be presented. For ill-posed problems, the talk will start with an illustration on how to adaptively use the radial basis functions to solve problems with boundary layer. The use of harmonic functions for inverse boundary determination will then lead to the recent development of combining the method of fundamental solutions with various regularization techniques to solve Cauchy problems and inverse heat conduction/source identification problems. Some recent works on using the particular solutions and Greenˇs functions will be highlighted. The potential application of the localized kernel based approximation method to solve large scale problems will be discussed.
