China’s commitment to climate research has been recognized as a global beacon of hope, according to Prof. Benjamin Horton, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). His insights, featured in a recent article by South China Morning Post (SCMP), underscore China's growing role in driving scientific advancements and environmental sustainability.

Prof. Horton emphasized China’s strong commitment to green technology, reforestation efforts, and government-backed environmental research as key factors driving its leadership in climate science. Having spent much of his career in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia, he sees China as a pro-environment superpower with the potential to drive global climate solutions.

In addition to his leadership at SEE, Prof. Horton plans to establish a climate research centre at CityUHK. He envisions this centre as a hub for climate scientists across Hong Kong universities, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from various fields. The initiative aims to strengthen Hong Kong’s role in global climate research and provide a platform for innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

Before his tenure at CityUHK, Prof. Horton served as the Director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore, where he led groundbreaking studies on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change across Southeast Asia. His leadership at SEE will further strengthen interdisciplinary research and collaborations aimed at advancing climate science and environmental innovation.
