Title

Origins and Consequences of Affective Polarization in the United States

Date:
16 July 2018
Speaker: Prof. Shanto Iyengar

Abstract

In this lecture, Professor Iyengar will describe the literature documenting the extent of animus across the party divide encompassing survey, implicit, and behavioral measures. He will then discuss the variety of factors responsible for the intensification of partisan animus. He will also explore the consequences of affective polarization, highlighting how partisan affect influences attitudes and behaviors well outside the political sphere. Finally, he will speculate over interventions that might mitigate partisan discord, and conclude with some suggestions for future work.
