Embarking on the Career Journey from Internship

Contributor: Ms Hayli Lau [Career and Leadership Centre, SDS]

The Career and Leadership Centre of Student Development Services supports CityU students in starting their career journey from internship. We are glad the number of internship participants in academic year 2021/22 records a 20% increment compared to the previous year and it is soaring high compared to the last five years. An internship provides students with opportunities to gain valuable on-the-job training and work exposure for their future career development, as well as enables employers to build talent pipelines for organisations to understand more about our new generation.

Macy KWOK (School of Law, Year 4) participated in the Administrative Service Summer Internship Programme last summer. During the fruitful two-month internship period, she applied her knowledge in the workplace and understood how AO handles cross-disciplinary matters efficiently and effectively.

“Working as an intern in the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau is an eye-opening experience for me. I vividly remembered that on my first day of work, my mentor, an Assistant Secretary, briefed me on his task of addressing inquiries raised by the LegCo members in the Special Finance Committee, and I had to assist him in doing policy research on the relevant topics. During our discussion, I realised that an AO has to work closely with stakeholders both internally and externally. Besides, I am glad to attend outings to the Cyberport and Science Park with interns from different departments to learn about the milestones of information and technology development in Hong Kong,” said Macy.

Niki CHEUNG (Media and Communication, Year 3), participant of the CityU Global Work Attachment Programme, completed the Virtual Internship at a Creative and Event Agency in Shanghai in the Summer 2022.

“It was a wonderful internship experience that helped me to explore myself, enhanced my critical thinking ability and interpersonal skills,” said Niki.

Andy LI (Information Systems, Year 4), awardee of Dr Ma Kai Yum Mainland Work Attachment Scholarships, completed her internship at an NGO in Guangzhou in the Summer 2022.

“The internship helped me gain a deeper understanding of volunteer organisations. Not only have I acquired the skills to organise volunteer activities, but I have also found the meaning of helping others through volunteer activities,” said Andy.
