CityU Gallery presents masterpieces by local artist Tong King-sum

Zoey Tsang

Wood carvings and jet print art by local artist Mr Tong King-sum are on display at CityU Gallery of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) from 18 September to 19 October.

The theme of the exhibition, featuring 10 wood carvings and 40 jet print art works, is “colour play” and it provides an excellent opportunity for the general public and people from CityU to view the work by one of Hong Kong’s most accomplished artists.

The opening ceremony was held on 18 September and officiating guests included Mr Tong King-sum, Mr Ma Fung-kwok, Chairman of the Hong Kong Art Development Council,

Ms Sabrina Fung, independent curator and Director of Sabrina Fung Fine Arts, Ms Portia Ip Lai-ping, curator of the exhibition and Professor Steve Ching Hsianghoo, University Librarian, Run Run Shaw Library of CityU.

“Mr Tong has devoted more than 30 years of his life to fine arts,” Mr Ma said. “He is a multi-talented artist who has experimented with different media and always looks to innovate. We respect his passion and dedication. He is a role model for young artists. The exhibition gives us a chance to take a look inside Mr Tong’s world of art.”

The inspiration for Mr Tong’s gently-wrought wood carvings comes from the human body and fruit as he tries to depict the vitality of nature. His jet print art is of a completely different style. He uses computers to create special effects on photographs and create art with strong colour elements and contrast. His work makes people think about the material world.

Mr Tong was born in Hong Kong in 1940. He studied sculpture under

Mr Cheung Yee and was one of the first people to join the Hong Kong Visual Arts Association, acting as President from 1992 to 1993. He has been exhibiting his work locally and overseas since 1972 and has received numerous awards in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

His work is collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong and other private collectors.

The exhibition is on display at CityU Gallery, 6/F Amenities Building. Opening hours are 10am to 7pm daily.
