ACE Mentorship

Background

In order to support CityU’s Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC) and better prepare the students to practise the profession of surveying in the industry, an Industrial Mentoring Scheme (IMS) has been developed by the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE), CityU. Under the scheme, experienced surveyors from the industry will take up the role of mentors and the students are able to discover the professional surveying practices through the guidance and advice from the industrial mentors.

Scope of Mentorship

Selected ACE students will be assigned to a mentor when he/she commences his/her third-year study under the four years curriculum. Each mentor should take care of the student until he/she has completed his/her surveying major. Therefore, each mentor will have a maximum of two students at the same time (i.e. one no. of third-year student and one no. of fourth-year student). In addition, a personal tutor, normally a member of the ACE teaching staff, will also be assigned to provide advice to each of the students.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

The aim of this DEC-IMS is to enrich the students’ learning at CityU by providing a platform for communication and experience sharing between experienced and future surveyors. This will assist the students to discover the profession of surveying through the support and encouragement of the mentor-student-personal tutor arrangement.

Upon successful completion of the scheme, the students will be able to:

ILO1: Discover the professional surveying practices
ILO2: Develop a learning log and apply the same knowledge in future
ILO3: relate theory to current practices
ILO4: Get prepared for a career in surveying
ILO5: Explore the construction industry with the assistance of the mentors

Roles

The mentors and students are at liberty to arrange and prepare for the mentoring sessions. This will allow the mentors and students the flexibility to cater for their specific needs. The students are expected to take the initiative during the mentoring process as well as the responsibility for managing the mentoring relationship. Moreover, it is anticipated that the students should communicate with the mentors at least TWICE in each of mentoring periods.

  • To support and encourage the students for learning and personal development
