IAS lectures

Professor David Quéré, ESPCI and École Polytechnique in Paris, will give a talk titled “A Few Spectacular Properties of Pearl Drops” as part of the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) Distinguished Lecture Series on 8 December. Pearl drops remain spherical on solids, which deeply modifies their behaviour compared to usual situations. The speaker will describe the recipes to generate pearl drops, show a few dynamical properties of these liquid pearls, and focus on water repellency, antifogging abilities, aerophilicity and self-propulsion. Professor Ye Yinyu will give a talk titled “Recent Algorithmic Developments for the Markov Decision/Game Process” as part of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) Distinguished Lecture Series: Frontiers in Operations Research/Operations Management on 4 January. Professor Ye is K.T. Li Chair Professor of Engineering at the Department of Management Science and Engineering, Stanford University and Director of the MS&E Industrial Affiliates Program. He received his B.S. degree in System Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research from Stanford University. CityU Distinguished Lecture

Professor Chen Xuemei, Professor of Plant Cell and Molecular Biology, Department of Botany and Plant Sciences, University of California, Riverside, will give a talk titled "Endoplasmic Reticulum, Translation, and Plant MicroRNAs" on 19 December. Professor Chen will talk about how miRNAs become associated with membranes and membrane-bound polysomes (MBPs), and how their MBP association affects their ability to trigger the production of secondary siRNAs from so-called noncoding transcripts. For more information, please visit here.

William Benter Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Peng Shige of Shandong University and a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences will give a talk as part of the William Benter Distinguished Lecture Series on 14 December. His talk is titled “Convergence Rate of Law of Large Numbers (LLN) and Central Limit Theorem (CLT) with Uncertainty of Probabilities”. This series of lectures is organised by CityU’s Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences. For more information, please visit here.

Kudos

Dr Guo Yongxin, PhD graduate in 2001, has been elected Fellow of IEEE for 2018 for his outstanding contributions to wideband printed antennas. During his studies in CityU’s Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), Dr Guo, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at National University of Singapore, specialised in researching the design and analysis of microstrip antennas and dielectric resonator antennas for wireless communications under the supervision of EE’s Chair Professor Luk Kwai-man.

Chair Professor Chiang Kin-seng; Dr Jin Wei, Senior Research Assistant; Dr Wu Yunfei, PhD graduate; and Huang Quandong, PhD student, of the Department of Electronic Engineering won the Best Paper Award at the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) 2017 with a paper titled “Six-mode multiplexer with cascaded vertical asymmetric waveguide directional couplers”.

Three projects designed by CityU alumni and students performed strongly in the final competition of the 15th Challenge Cup. Li Hongfei, Liu Zhuoxin and Wan Ching-yin, two PhD students and a undergraduate, respectively, from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, received the Second Prize for their project titled “An extremely safe and wearable solid state zinc ion battery”; Wong Nok-ching and Xu Yaohai, both graduates in the Department of Computer Science, won the Third Prize with the project “FastLSH: A Similarity Search Engine on High-Dimensional Big Data”. Lam Wah-shing of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Leung Chiu-yee of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering teamed up to win the Third Prize with the project “An Innovative Tunnel Wind Power Generator”.

Two CityU teams have won in the Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP) 2017 held in Cyberport. The members of the winning team ODAPP (One Device All Payment Platform) were Lam Yu-hin (Year 4 student on the BEng in Computer Engineering), Toto Ho Lok-to (Year 4 student on the BSc in Creative Media) and Yip Yu-cheong (Year 4 student on the BEng in Information Engineering). The members of the other team, Fund2Play, a crowdfunding platform for matching event organisers and participants, were Kevin Suen Cheuk-wing (Year 4 student on the BBA in Information Management), Cheng Chi-hung (Year 4 student on the BBA in Information Management) and Chan Yeung-tsing (Year 4 student on the BBA in Business Analysis). A total of 21 teams were admitted to CUPP 2017 and 12 teams won prizes including HK$100,000 in seed funding for developing fintech business ideas.
