Freight transportation is of utmost importance for society. Road transport accounts for about 26% of all energy consumption and 18% of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. Despite this influence, road transportation is mainly carried out by individual long-haul trucks with no real-time coordination or global optimisation. Professor Karl H. Johansson of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden will discuss these issues at a talk titled “Cooperative Road Freight Transport: Opportunities and Challenges in Networked Control” on 12 March. For more information, please visit here.

Major (unipolar) depression disorder is a devastating disease afflicting some 10% of the population, with more women than men affected. The etiology is still unclear, but stress may represent an important factor. Professor Tomas Hökfelt of the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and Senior Fellow at IAS, will explore this area of neuroscience in a talk titled “Derangement of the Neuropeptide Galanin System in Major Depression Disorder: New Treatment Opportunities?” on 21 March.
