Information Day 2019
Thousands of prospective students and their families will attend this year’s Information Day on 19 October to find out more about what we do, what we have achieved and how we can realise young people’s career dreams. Highlights include tours of campus and facilities, talks on undergraduate majors, and tips on everything interested students might want to know about university. HKIAS Distinguished Lecture
Have we reached peak Moore’s law? This and other matters related to 5G technology and AI applications form the focus of a talk by Professor Tu King-ning of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. His talk on 9 October is held through the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS). Professor Tu received his PhD degree in Applied Physics from Harvard University in 1968, his MSc degree in Materials Science from Brown University in 1964, and his BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1960. Outstanding research awards
To recognise and reward research excellence, the Outstanding Research Awards were initiated in 2007. This year Professor Gary Feng Gang, Chair Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Professor Kim Sung-moon, Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), Professor of the Department of Public Policy and Director of the Centre for East Asian and Comparative Philosophy, have been selected for the excellence of their research output.
In addition, the Outstanding Research Award Junior Faculty winners for this year are Dr Lu Yang, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Dr Wang Cong, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science.
Dialogue Series with Consuls General: India
The Dialogue Series with Consuls General provides students and staff with excellent opportunities to exchange ideas and learn about the latest development of a number of selected countries. The seminar aims to help students and staff enhance their understanding of different cultures, gain insights and inspirations from the honoured speakers and guests from different countries. Mrs Priyanka Chauhan, Consul-General of India to Hong Kong, will discuss opportunities for future studies and career development in India on 15 October.
CityU Arts Festival
The opening concert on 4 October for this year’s festival features the CityU Philharmonic Orchestra with violinist Mr Paolo Morena, bassoonist Ms Yung Tsangshien, violinist Ms Li Na and recorder player Ms Chao Yu Ching. The festival, presented by the Cultural and Sports Committee, has been enriching the cultural atmosphere on campus and promoting CityU as a hub of arts for youngsters and the community since 2015. Holocaust exhibition
Through letters, diaries, paintings and toys, a new exhibition at the Library explores the experience of children during the Holocaust. Speakers at the opening ceremony for “Stars without a Heaven: Children in the Holocaust” on 16 October include Mrs Ahuva Spieler, Consul-General of the State of Israel to Hong Kong and Macau, and students from Elsa High School in Shau Kei Wan. The event is a collaboration with the Department of English and the Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre, and it takes place in the Wofoo Foundation Gallery in the Library from 16 to 31 October.
Student Research Showcase 2019
Student Research Showcase 2019 displayed around 20 undergraduate research projects in the form of academic posters on 20 September at The Atrium, Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building. It was organised by the Chan Feng Men-ling Chan Shuk-lin English Language Centre to maximise students’ potential in research presentations. Kudos
“Talktag”, a device for the visually impaired, won the bronze award for technology at the 13th international Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe 2019) in Canberra, Australia held from 26 to 29 August. “Talktag” was created by Owen Kwong Hau-shing and Chloe Lam Nga-wai of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Olive Chung Wing-lam of the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering. The students competed against 22 international teams to win bronze. The device was created through TEDY (Technologies for the Elderly and Disabled people by Youths), a programme under the Jockey Club Enhancing Youth Empathy Project through Immersive Visualisation project, which is funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
Dr Denvid Lau Tak-bun, Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, will be a visiting professor at MIT from January 2020 to July 2020 during his sabbatical. He received his PhD in the field of structures and materials from MIT in 2012.
