Honorary doctorates

We will confer honorary doctoral degrees on Professor Michael I. Kotlikoff and Dr the Honourable Edward Leong Che-hung, GBM, GBS, OBE, JP in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society.

The President's Lecture Series

Bubbles are a peculiar pocket of gases penetrating our daily life from bathing to drinking. This talk discusses how bubbles created by the waves breaking in the oceans may have crucial effects on absorbing carbon dioxide in the air. This talk “Bubbles: Science, Sustainability and Technology” by Professor Pan Chin, Head and Chair Professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering, on 12 November is part of the President's Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia. Professor Pan researches multi-phase flow and boiling heat transfer. For more, visit here.

Many material properties depend on their structure at a scale much larger than atoms and electrons. Controlling microstructure evolution is one of the main challenges of materials science. Professor David Srolovitz, Chair Professor in the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics, and Senior Fellow at the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study, will discuss at his talk on 29 November how to understand one type of microstructure evolution from the atomic to the continuum scales. CityU Distinguished Lecture Workshop

There will be three speakers at this workshop titled "Nanophotonics of Low-dimensional Materials and Structures" on 11 November. Professor Harry A. Atwater, a Howard Hughes Professor and Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology, researches how advances in nanophotonics are yielding conceptually new photonic technologies. Professor Xu Hongxing, Director of the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Wuhan University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will look at plasmonics, a rapidly emerging branch of photonics that offers variable means to manipulate light using plasmon excitations on metal nanostructures. Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue, Provost and Chair Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science at CityU, will discuss work related to molecular engineering the shape, size, interactive forces, interfaces energy levels and the controlled self-assembly of organic and inorganic hybrid functional materials. International Workshop on Solid-State Quantum Computing (IWSSQC)

The 10th IWSSQC from 18 to 20 November at CityU focuses on recent experimental and theoretical developments in all aspects of solid-state implementations for quantum information processing as well as related areas. The event is co-organised by CityU and the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study. More details can be found here.

Dialogue Series with Consuls General

Mr Yap Wei Sin, Consul General of Malaysia in Hong Kong and Macao, will introduce opportunities for future studies and career development in Malaysia on 13 November at the latest in the Dialogue Series with Consuls General. These events provide CityU students and staff with excellent opportunities to exchange ideas and learn about the latest development of a number of selected countries. Kudos

Professor Yan Hong, Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been elected Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts under the class of Technical and Environmental Sciences in recognition of his work on intelligent multidimensional data analysis and imaging, video and biomedical applications. The European Academy of Sciences and Arts is a non-governmental, European association committed to promoting scientific and societal progress.

Professor Jun Wang, Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science, received the 2019 Norbert Wiener Award for his outstanding contributions to the theory, methodology, and applications of neurodynamic optimisation, and the Outstanding Contribution Award for his contribution serving as the editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics from 2014 to 2019, both from the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC) Society.

Professor Wang Dongan of the Department of Biomedical Engineering has been elected Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry, a learned society in the UK that dates back to the 1840s with the goal of advancing the chemical sciences. The Society gives fellowships to scientists who have made major contributions to chemistry and other interface disciplines such as biological chemistry.

“Magnetic Control Microrobot Advanced Manufacturing System”, a project by the Centre for Robotics and Automation, was included in the “Top Ten Technological Progress of Intelligent Manufacturing of China 2019” by the Intelligent Manufacturing Alliance of CAST Member Societies. The team is led by Professor Sun Dong, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The prize was presented at the 2019 World Intelligent Manufacturing Conference in Nanjing on 17 October.
