President’s Lecture Series

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) dominate the market for flat-panel displays for both hand-hold electronics and larger screen TVs due to their low power consumption, high definition, and versatile form factors. Now there are only two kinds of emitters required for further exploration, namely: true-blue and near infrared emitters, to which the emissions occur at opposite ends of the visible spectrum. In this lecture, Professor Chi Yun, Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Chemistry, will talk about their effect on the development of related transition-metal based phosphors and OLED devices. The title of his online talk is “Transition-metal phosphors and corresponding organic light emitting diodes” and it will be held on 23 March. More information is available here.

HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series

This month there will be three talks for the Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics held by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study. The first notes that the key requirements for nanotechnology, besides high resolution, are high uniformity over a large area and high reproducibility, and that nano-imprint, dry etching, and conformal deposition are applied to generate high-performance devices and sensors. In this talk, the results of applying 3D asymmetrical nanopillars with sharp Fano resonance to detect low concentration cells, exosomes, and so forth, with high sensitivity will be explored. The speaker is Professor Stella Pang, Head, Department of Electrical Engineering (EE); Director, Centre for Biosystems, Neuroscience, and Nanotechnology; and Member, State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves (SKLTMW). The talk is titled “Nanotechnology for High-Performance Devices and Sensors” and will be delivered online on 1 March.

One of the crucial components of all wireless devices is the antenna. However, modern antennas cannot be easily recognised as they can be imbedded in devices or disguised in the environment. In this talk, major milestones in the development of antennas for modern wireless connectivity will be reviewed, specifically technologies that have been invented and developed at CityU. The speaker, Professor Luk Kwai-man, is Chair Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, and Member, SKLTMW. The talk held online on 17 March is titled “Antenna Scientists – Magicians in the Era of Wireless Connectivity”.

Meta-devices using meta-surfaces composed of artificial nanostructures can manipulate the electromagnetic phase, polarisation, and amplitude at will. The fundamental principle, design, fabrication, and applications of the novel optical meta-devices, plus design principles and application prospects of meta-lens, will be addressed. The talk is titled “Meta-Devices: From Sensing and Imaging to Quantum Optical Chip” and will be given online by Professor Tsai Din-ping, Chair Professor in EE, on 30 March.

More information about these three talks is available here.

Dialogue Series with Consuls General

Mr Thomas Gnocchi, Head of the European Union (EU) Office to Hong Kong and Macao, will give an online talk on 16 March covering opportunities in the EU for future studies and career development. For enquiries, call 3442 8263.

CityU Walk Contest 2022

This activity for staff, students, alumni and friends is part of a Wellness For All programme from 1 to 31 March 2022. All you need do to enter is download and install “CityU Walk” app and get walking. Official results will be announced on 1 April. Medals go to the top 3 teams and individual, and souvenirs to the top 30 committed walkers, the top 10 teams and to entrants who walked 10,000 steps or more per day for 7 days in a row during the contest. More information can be found here.

Kudos

Dr Katie Chan Kei-hang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has won the 2022 Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award for her abstract “Identification of Genetic Signals For ‘Diabesity’ – Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity – Among African American and European American Participants In Four Cohorts Of The TOPMed Consortium”. The award, presented by the American Heart Association, recognises the primary author with the highest ranked abstract from Hong Kong at the EPI |Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2022. Dr Chan’s study demonstrates that both “pathway and network-based analytical approaches may identify novel signals from gene sets for highly clustering clinical phenotypes such as diabetes and obesity and improve their target validation for intervention”.
