New Appointments

Professor Li Lishuai, Associate Professor of the Department of Data Science, has been appointed Associate Vice-President (Strategic Research) effective from 1 May 2025.

Professor Benjamin Horton has been appointed Chair Professor of Earth Science and Dean of the School of Energy and Environment, effective from 22 April 2025. Professor Horton was previously the Director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore and the AXA-Nanyang Professor in Natural Hazards at Nanyang Technological University.



Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture (PH)

Professor Clare Bryant, Professor of Innate Immunity at the University of Cambridge, will deliver a talk titled “Working with Industry: consultancies, collaborations and start-ups” on 8 May. In her lecture, Professor Bryant will outline her journey from translating her scientific research to innovative start-up projects, including the pitfalls she has encountered, as well as her latest venture in the US Scientific Advisory Board and an associated start-up. Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Sir Mark Welland, Director of Research in Nanoscience at the University of Cambridge, will give a lecture titled ¨Understanding and Treating Disease Using Nanoscience〃 on 13 May. Professor Wellandˇs research focuses on nanoscience and nanotechnology, including the properties and fabrication of nanoscale structures and devices, nanoelectronics for future communications and sensing, and the growth kinetics of diseases like Alzheimerˇs. Exhibition

From 9 May to 28 September, the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery will display an exhibition titled “Central African Art–Invocation of an Unseen World”, showcasing nearly 200 historical artworks from Central Africa, spanning the 19th to the early 20th century. Through the three treasures of Central African Art–ritual sculptures, masks, and weapons–the exhibition will transform the gallery into a unique immersive experience that will allow visitors to perceive art through multi-sensory channels.

The winners of the CityUHK Outstanding Research Award for 2024-25 are Professor Edmund Cheng of the Department of Public and International Affairs, Professor Johnny Ho Chung-yin of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor Huang Yu, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The winners in the Outstanding Research Award for Junior Faculty are Professor Pakpong Chirarattananon of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Professor Lauren Lin Yu-hsin of the School of Law. 

CityUHKˇs Thetos Young Scholar Award was awarded to Professor Chan Siu-ming of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences and Professor Zhao Xiangyu of the Department of Data Science. 

Professor Wang Cheng of the Department of Electrical Engineering has been recognised in the category of Applied Research in the list of Chinaˇs Top 10 Advances in Optics, which is produced by Chinese Laser Press. This recognition is for his research outcomes in the paper ¨Integrated lithium niobate microwave photonic processing engine", published in Nature in February 2024. This collaborative project involved Professor Wangˇs PhD students, graduate students, postdocs plus researchers from CityUHK Dongguan, Nankai University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. 

PhD student Bo Xue, supervised by Professor Alex Wong of the Department of Electrical Engineering, has won First Prize at the Student Paper Awards at the 5th Marina Forum on Metantennas and Antenna Systems with his paper titled ¨Achieving Broadband Near-Field Directionality with a 3D Active Janus Antenna〃. The Marina Forum, organised by IEEE Singapore RFID Chapter, is an international conference that covers a range of topics related to metamaterials, metasurfaces, metantenna technologies, reconfigurable antennas, collocated multiple antennas, and relevant applications. 

PhD student Xie Tiantian, supervised by Professor Rosa Chan of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Dr Wang Pengpai, a postdoc in the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, won the Best Student Paper Award at the 4th IEEE International Conference on Micro/Nano Sensors for AI, Healthcare, and Robotics (NSENS 2025) with the paper ¨Spatiotemporal Attention Learning Framework for Event-Driven Object Recognition〃. IEEE-NSENS 2025 was organised by the Northeast University at Qinhuangdao, City University of Hong Kong, and Peking University and sponsored by the IEEE Nanotechnology Council. The event focused on advancing research in sensors, nanotechnology, AI, healthcare monitoring, and robotics.
