Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony
The foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Multi-media Building will take place at 3pm on 26 March at the building site located on Cornwall Street. The ceremony will be officiated by Mr Michael Suen Ming-yeung, Secretary for Education; Mr Michael V Stone, Secretary-General, University Grants Committee (UGC); Mrs Dorothy Ma Chow Pui-fun, Deputy Secretary-General, UGC; Mr Chung Shui-ming, Council Chairman of CityU; Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President; and Professor James Moy, Dean of School of Creative Media. The building, scheduled for completion in 2010, will be one of the world's most advanced teaching and research facilities in the creative media field. Staff are welcome to witness this significant moment.

University Development Forum
In preparation for moving towards the four-year curriculum, the Senate approved the structure of the four-year normative degree in 2006 to provide the framework upon which the university would design the new curriculum. To assist faculties and schools with implementation of this new degree structure, the Four-Year Curriculum Implementation Group has completed a draft consultation document, which will replace existing regulations. The University is now seeking views from faculties and schools on this draft document. At a forum to be held on 20 March in the Wei Hing Theatre at 3:30pm, Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Acting Vice President (Undergraduate Education), and Dr Jerry Yu Jer-tsang, Chief Information Officer, will discuss developments related to the proposed new structure.

Researchers rewarded
The judging panel for the new CityU Research Excellence Awards Scheme to recognise and reward outstanding research achievements has conferred the Grand Award upon Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics; and the Award of Excellence to Professor Paul Chu Kim-ho, Chair Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science. Professor Zhang is a world renowned scholar in humanities and cross-cultural studies, while Professor Chu is a leading expert in plasma science and materials engineering.

Faculty of Business receives triple accreditations
The Faculty of Business has become the only business school in the Greater China region to be triple accredited. The recent accreditation by the Association of MBAs, together with those received from AACSB International in 2005 and EQUIS in 2007, reinforce the reputation of the Faculty, as well as CityU as an international institution.

Departmental integration
The Senate this month approved the integration of the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST) into the Faculty of Science and Engineering as one of its academic units. The proposal was deemed to bring about a logical alignment of BST with the overall organisational structure of the University.

French honour
Mr David Santandreu Calonge, Senior Education Development Officer of the Education Development Office, has been appointed as a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques ("Knight in the Order of Academic Palms") by the French Minister of National Education. He is also one of only six French nationals to be awarded the "Trophées Sénat de la présence française à l'étranger" (International Trophies of the French Abroad), a competition jointly organised by the French Parliament (Senate) and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hundreds of scholarships awarded
CityU presented more than 500 scholarships worth a total of HK$10 million to outstanding students courtesy of funds donated by professional bodies, charitable trust funds, private firms and the CityU Staff Giving Club on 13 March.

Transport team
Employing teamwork, analytical skills and flawless presentation, students from the Department of Public and Social Administration towered over their Macau and Hong Kong fellow competitors in winning the 2008 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Student Day Championship. The five winning students from CityU were Tony Chan Hoi-hong, Lucy Cheng Lo-sai, Castle Ng Yu-hok, Ivan Wan Ying-wai and Timothy Wan Lap-tsun. Organised by the CILT on 8 March, the contest was held to arouse the interest of students in the logistics and transport industry.

Sporting domination
CityU Athletic Teams put in a brilliant performance at this month's Annual Athletic Meet organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. CityU created history by capturing all the overall championship titles as well as the top individual prizes, including the event Overall Champion, Men's Overall Champion, Women's Overall Champion and the Most Valuable Male and Female Athlete awards.

Cross-cultural art exhibition
The Chinese Civilisation Centre is holding an exhibition entitled "The Works of the Visiting Artists from China in Edo Period" from 15 March to 27 April at CityU Gallery. About 50 artworks by Chinese artists visiting Japan from the end of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) will be on display.
