New President
The CityU Council Secreatriat has announced that Professor Way Kuo will assume office as the President of the University on 14 May 2008.


Honorary awards
CityU is to confer the title of Honorary Fellow on four distinguished persons in recognition of their distinctive contribution to the development of, and service to, the University. Upon the recommendation of the Honorary Awards Committee of the Council, Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Pro-Chancellor of the University, has approved the conferment of the title of Honorary Fellow to Mr Edward Cheng Wai-sun, Mr Karl C Kwok, Mr John Lee Luen-wai and Ms Marina Wong Yu-pok. The Honorary Fellow Presentation Ceremony will be held on 18 June 2008.


Alumni relations
The inauguration ceremony of CityU's first Standing Committee of the Convocation was held on 7 April, marking a milestone in the development of alumni relations at CityU. The Standing Committee in the coming two years will organise events that unite alumni and support the development of the Convocation and the University. The mission of the Convocation, only the third in Hong Kong, is to "consolidate the strengths of the alumni and support the development of the alma mater."


Technology transfer
CityU researchers are showcasing their latest research at the International ICT Expo 2008 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Nine innovative projects on networking, wireless communications and telecommunications are to be demonstrated. The exhibition will last until 17 April.

Separately, at the BioX@SciencePark on 28 April, Genetel Pharmaceuticals, a CityU subsidiary company, will promote its commercialisation experience. The forum will also feature projects on smart metallic materials for spinal implants and pollution research.


Law journal gains in stature
The Asia Pacific Law Review, a journal of the School of Law, has become the first Asia-based law journal to be included in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), the world-renowned database of Thomson Scientific. The recognition reinforces the reputation of the School, as well as CityU, as an international institution.


Building excellence
BuiltExpo 2008, the 15th Student Project of the Year Competition and Exhibition, will be held from 18 April to 19 April under the banner theme, Towards Building Excellence. Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Secretary for Development, Government of the Hong Kong SAR and Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate Education), will be the guests of honour for the opening ceremony to be held at the Wei Hing Theatre on 18 April at 10am. The annual event is organised by the Division of Building Science and Technology and will showcase more than 100 creations that demonstrate students' resourcefulness and creativity.


Literary Festival
The third City Literary Festival opening ceremony, incorporating the City Mobility Symposium, will be held on 18 April. Eleven prominent writers have been invited to participate in the symposium, including Mr Bei Dao, Mr Li Rui, Professor Lee Oufan, Mr Chang Ta-chuan, Mr Lu Hao, Mr Liu Wai-tong, Mr Yan Lianke, Professor Liu Zaifu, Professor Lau Shiu-ming, Professor Cheng Chou-yu and Professor Chung Ling. The Exchange Forum for Young Writers will be held on 19 April.


Best paper award
Professor Keith Zhang Qitu, Department of Electronic Engineering, won the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference 2008 for his co-authored paper On Energy Spreading Transform Based MIMO Systems: Capacity and Diversity. The conference, held from 31 March to 3 April in Las Vegas, was one of the world's foremost international technical conferences for engineers and researchers at the forefront of the development and deployment of wireless technologies.


Library offers awards
The Run Run Shaw Library organised the third annual Outstanding Academic Papers by Students certificate presentation ceremony on 11 April to offer recognition to students who excelled in academic writing. Altogether 53 papers by 60 students from eight academic departments were selected, with the papers now on display in the Learning Commons.

 

Sporting supremacy
CityU sports teams have won 10 champion titles, five runners-up, three third places and three fourth places in sports competitions held by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. Their consistency throughout the events ensured CityU also claimed the overall championship in both the men's and women's divisions in 200708.

 

Going the Distance
Wong Wai-nap, a second year student of the School of Creative Media, who co-produced the film Distance with other 10 students, won a Special Mention in student division of the Third Fresh Wave Short Film Competition. The contest was organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society.

 

Scholarship
Eric Chen Zixiang, a Year 1 student enrolled in the BEng (Hons) in e-Logistics and Technology Management programme jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science and Deparatment of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, has been awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship.
