New Council Chairman
Mr Leung Chun-ying, convenor of the Executive Council, has been appointed by the Chief Executive as Council Chairman of CityU with effect from 22 October 2008 for a period of three years. Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, said he had full confidence in Mr Leung leading CityU to even higher standards of excellence. He also thanked Mr Chung Shui-ming, current Council Chairman, for his contributions to the university.

 

Honorary Fellowship Conferment
The University will, on 18 June, confer the title of Honorary Fellow on four distinguished persons in recognition of their distinctive contribution to the development of, and service to, the University. They are Mr Edward Cheng Wai-sun, Mr Karl C Kwok, Mr John Lee Luen-wai and Ms Marina Wong Yu-pok. Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Mr Chung Shui-ming and Professor Way Kuo, Pro-Chancellor, Council Chairman and President of the University respectively, will officiate at the ceremony.

 

Laboratory holds the key
CityU has obtained approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology to set up the State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves. It will be the first such laboratory in the engineering discipline in Hong Kong, focusing on researching the principal theories and applications of millimeter waves, including the improvement of its penetration to make the technology more accessible. It also has implications for the development of communication technologies in China.


Climate control
The Guy Carpenter Asia-Pacific Climate Impact Centre launch ceremony was held at CityU on 16 June in appreciation of the support of donor Guy Carpenter and Company. The Centre, which will serve as the regional hub for climate research, aims to help the countries in the Asia-Pacific region better understand climate-related threats, assess catastrophic risk and provide predictions on severe climatic events.

 

Artificial intelligence
The Artificial Intelligence and Railway Engineering Works Scheduling project led by Dr Andy Chun Hon-wai, Associate Professor of Department of Computer Science, is being exhibited at the Science News Corner, Hong Kong Science Museum from now until mid-October. Mr Michael Wong Hing-lan and Professor Cheng Shiu-yuen, Chief Curator and Expert Advisor of Hong Kong Science Museum respectively, and Professor Robert Li Kwok-yiu, Associate Dean, Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Dr Andy Chun officiated at the Opening Ceremony on 13 June.

 

Mathematics conference
The Foundations of Computational Mathematics conference will take place at CityU from 16 June to 26 June. More than 400 mathematicians from around the world will attend the 11-day conference. Professor (Chair) Roderick Wong Sue-cheun, Vice-President (Research), will be one of the plenary speakers. The conference is co-organised by the Society for Foundations of Computational Mathematics and CityU. It is co-sponsored by the Universityˇs Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences and Department of Mathematics and the Hong Kong-based Croucher Foundation.


Leading the way
Five outstanding students were selected by The Dragon Foundation, based on their academic results as well as leadership, to participate in the Global Citizenship Programme. Wong Hoi-yi, a Year 3 School of Law student, was one of the delegates to Geneva; Ng Kam-kay, a Year 4 School of Law student, Crystal Ongkingco, a Year 2 Department of Marketing student, Pan Geni, a Year 2 Department of Accountancy student and Sun Yu, a Year 2 Department of Mathematics student, were delegates to New York. They will meet global leaders in non-governmental and international organisations such as the United Nations.

 

Kudos
Professor Ron Chen Guanrong, Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, was conferred Honorary Professor by the Northeastern University in Liaoning.

 

Electrifying performance
Mr Ng Ka-ho, an MPhil fresh graduate from the Department of Electronic Engineering, received the Second Award in the 3rd IEEE Hong Kong Signal Processing Postgraduate Forum. Mr Chan Kit-wing, a PhD student in the same department, received the Merit Award. They are supervised respectively by Associate Professors Dr Po Lai-man and Dr So Hing-cheung.


External appointments
Professor Wei Kwok-kee, Dean, Faculty of Business, has been appointed an Adjunct Professor at two mainland universities, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan University. Professor Zhou Nan, Head, Department of Marketing, has been appointed an Adjunct Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. In addition, Professor Chan Yan-cheong, Chair Professor, Department of Electronic Engineering, has been appointed the Consultant Professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology with a three-year term from May 2008 to May 2011.


Wax works
Is there an important item in your life that you would like enshrined for posterity? If so, and provided you have no objection to giving up the keepsake, it may be worth paying a visit to the Student Development Services Office and visiting international artist Ms Tan Yuk-king. As part of the Student Orientation 2008 festivities, Ms Tan will encase the donated items in colourful wax to incorporate into a large sculpture to be exhibited in the University Concourse. The collection deadline is 15 July.
