New structure
CityU has adopted a new management structure that aims to streamline operations, empower faculty and leadership teams and clarify lines of accountability. Among the major elements of the reorganisation are the establishment of the Provost position to oversee academic-related matters; a newly upgraded Vice-President to lead and consolidate the University's development and external relations functions; the establishment of the Office of Vice-President for Student Affairs, which will coordinate all matters related to both undergraduate and graduate student affairs; the post of Vice-President (Research) retitled Vice-President for Research and Technology; and the post of Vice-President (Administration) re-titled Vice-President for Finance and Administration; the establishment of the Chief-of-Staff position to coordinate matters relating to the operation, planning and development of the University and to ensure good governance.

The Senate and the Council also approved a change from the use of the label "Faculty" to "College". Therefore, CityU now has three academic colleges (Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering) and two schools (Creative Media and Law).


Biomedical programme
The University has invited experts to provide advice on establishing biomedical engineering academic programmes. The three-day visit began on 1 December, during which CityU received guidance from the advisors on establishing subjects for the curriculum. The committee consists of Professor Walter H Hsu from Iowa State University, Professor Lo Yuk-lam from the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, Professor Wang Lihong from Washington University in St Louis, and Professor Zhang Yantian from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.


Wind tunnel
The Wind Tunnel Facility of the Department of Building and Construction will open at a ceremony on 4 December. Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Secretary for Development, Mr Mak Chai-kwong, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) will officiate at the ceremony, together with Professor Way Kuo, President, Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Provost, Professor Roderick Wong Sue-cheun, Vice-President (Research), Professor Chan Chi-hou, Dean of College of Science and Engineering, Professor Sritawat Kitipornchai, Head of Department of Building and Construction, and Professor Edmund Choi Cheong-chuen from the same department.


Mathematics conference
The International Conference on Partial Differential Equations and Applications co-sponsored by the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences will take place from 5-8 December. The objectives of the conference are to review and discuss some of the latest trends in the field of partial differential equations and applications. The conference is dedicated to Professor Philippe G Ciarlet, Professor Emeritus, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and Chair Professor, CityU, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.


International conference
A forum to be held on 6-7 December will bring together more than 50 communication scholars and public relations experts to discuss a range of issues focusing on crisis communication management. The Crisis Management and Integrated Strategic Communication Conference is sponsored by the Department of Media and Communication, in collaboration with the School of Journalism and Information Communication of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Participants from Greater China, the United States, and New Zealand will attend.


New chapter
The CityU Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma Installation Ceremony and First Induction Ceremony was held by the College of Business on 26 November. Beta Gamma Sigma is a society accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, which invites outstanding business schools to establish collegiate chapters. Chapter Honouree Awards were conferred upon Dr Joseph Yam Chi-kong, GBS, JP, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and Dr Liu Changle, JP, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Phoenix Satellite Television Company, for their contributions to Hong Kong society.


Distinguished lecturer
Dr Doris Au Wai-ting, Associate Professor of the Department of Biology and Chemistry, has been presented the Distinguished Lecturer in Toxicology Award by the Toxicology Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. The award is presented to world-class researchers in environmental science, particularly in the field of environmental toxicology or chemistry.


Financial planning contest
CityU finished third in the Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts (HKSFA) University Investment Research Competition 2008-09. The team members were Xiao Wenhui (team leader), Li Wing-yuen, Tsang Tsz-man and Lilian Liem Lee-lin, all of whom are 3rd year BBA(Hons) Finance students.


Fuzzy logic
Tung Hoi-yan, Department of Electronic Engineering (EE) MPhil student, won third prize in the IEEE Hong Kong Section 2008 (PG) Student Paper Contest for her paper entitled A Fuzzy Logic Algorithm for Energy Management. Her supervisor is Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor of EE.
