Research awards 
The Office of the Vice-President (Research and Technology) is inviting applications for the CityU Research Excellence Award 2009. Full-time faculty members of the University with at least one year service at the time of application, and holding an appointment of not less than one year from the anticipated date of the award (i.e. November 2009), can apply. The application deadline is 28 February 2009. Shortlisted candidates are required to attend an interview with the Selection Panel in May 2009. Enquiries can be directed to yeunghy@cityu.edu.hk .


Research grant  
Professor Cheng Sheung-tak of the Department of Applied Social Studies has been granted almost $5 million by the Research Grants Council (RGC) for his project, “A Benefit-finding Intervention for Family Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease”, in the new Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme that supports and promotes longer-term public policy research projects. Professor Cheng’s project focuses on the development of an innovative intervention intended to reduce stress and promote the well-being of family caregivers of Alzheimer’s sufferers. The RGC received 11 research project applications and Professor Cheng’s project is one of the two successful applications.

 

Legal lecture 
A public lecture on the role of lawyers in defending the law will be held on 10 February. The speaker will be Mr Cheng Huan, a Malaysian-born Hong Kong lawyer appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 1988. Throughout his legal career, he has specialised in criminal law and aspects of civil law such as defamation. The talk is being staged by the School of Law.

 

Health and safety 
Division of Building Science and Technology (BST) recent graduates Yeung Nga-ka, Chan Kin-lok and Cheng Chi-ho jointly received the Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC) Best Project Award for the 2008 academic year. Their award-winning project, "Measure and Control on Demolition Safety", was supervised by Mr Raymond Wong Wai-man, Lecturer of BST. The Best Project Award is an annual event organised by OSHC to promote occupational safety and health among Hong Kong post-secondary students.


Social service 
Two graduates of the Department of Applied Social Studies, Ms Fermi Wong Wai-fun and Ms Debby Wong Pui-ling, received the Outstanding Social Worker Award and Junior Social Worker Award respectively at the 18th Outstanding Social Worker Award organised by the Hong Kong Social Worker Association.


Sporting chance
