Humour the key 
As part of CityU's Distinguished Lecture Series, Dr Jason Hu, Mayor, City of Taichung, Taiwan, will deliver a lecture on 7 December entitled "Humour is the Key". Dr Hu was elected mayor in 2001 and has remained in office since, with great support from the community. In Taiwan, Dr Hu is well reputed for his gentle heart, good intentions, wit and eloquence. He received the Best Government Spokesman Award and the Top Ten Chinese Award in 1993, Outstanding Professional Achievement Award in 1996, and an Honorary Doctorate from University of Southampton in 1997.

 

Semiotics roundtable 
The 8th International Roundtable for the Semiotics of Law organised by the Department of English will be held at Multi-media Conference Room on 1–4 December under the theme "Transparency, Control and Power: Issues in Legal Semiotics." Participants will explore semiotic, as well as philosophical, pragmatic, psychological, rhetorical, sociolinguistic and visual perspectives on transparency, control and power.

 

Technology showcase
Twenty-seven CityU research projects from the College of Science and Engineering and School of Energy and Environment will be showcased at the 11th China Hi-Tech Fair held from 16 to 21 November at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is the largest and most influential exhibition on science and technology in China and regarded as the foremost Chinese exhibition within the industry. It has attracted around 3,000 exhibitors from around the world.

 

Korean lecture 
As part of the Eminent Speakers Lecture Series, the School of Law is hosting a lecture by Professor Nohyoung Park, Professor of International Law, College of Law, Korea University and member of the International Advisory Board, School of Law, CityU. The lecture on 20 November is entitled "Two Koreas: Where to Stand?" and will take place in LT-10, Academic Building.

 

Design success 
Three Architectural Studies students with the Division of Building Science and Technology built a reputation at the 2009 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture. The architectural design by Chow Wing-hang, Or Man-piu and Law Hing-wai was chosen as the only student exhibit among the 10 projects to be shown at the developing West Kowloon Cultural District from 4 December to 27 February 2010. The theme of their work "Interconnectivity" is street furniture for public space and it symbolises the link between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

 

Lingnan masters 
The Chinese Civilisation Centre is staging the "Legacy of Cang Cheng, Masters of Lingnan School: The Art of Nigel Szeto" exhibition, from 17 November to 3 January 2010 at CityU Gallery, with more than 50 paintings and stationery masterpieces on display.

 

Sports on course 
The CityU cross country teams performed well in the inter-collegiate competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. The women's and men's teams finished second and third respectively in their divisions, and won the overall third prize in the race.
