Haiti disaster relief
The destructive earthquake that has levelled much of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, last week has claimed more than 50,000 lives and left many more homeless, hungry and thirsty. To support the emergency relief and rehabilitation effort, the University appeals to you to make a donation through direct payment to CityU's Hang Seng Bank account (account number: (024)-293-1-187708) by 1 February. The funds will be passed to The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The Students' Union will also arrange to have donation boxes around the campus to collect donations from 20-27 January.

Distinguished lecture
A City University Distinguished Lecture is being held on 28 January (Thursday), with Dr Don Eigler examining the ultimate limit of miniaturisation. Entitled "The Small Frontier," the lecture will explore the nanometer-scale world and modern efforts to build things atom-by-atom from the bottom up.

Idea Contest
The new CityU Strategic Plan 2010-2015: Excellence in Research and Professional Education gives us a glimpse of a brighter future, while the CityU History Books Box Set allows us to reflect on the past and pay tribute to those who have assisted CityU's progress from a Polytechnic to a world-class university ranked internationally among the top 150. To encourage students to play a more proactive role in shaping the future of the University, the Library has organised a quiz on CityU's history and a creative ideas contest to enhance awareness of the goals set out in the Strategic Plan. Please join us for your chance to win attractive prizes such as an iPhone, iPod nano, SanDisk USB drives and the CityU History Books Box Set. Details are available from http://144.214.125.53/library/main.html

Sports centre named
CityU has named its sports centre after Mr Hu Fa Kuang, founder of Ryoden Development, as the Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre. The renaming in appreciation of his significant contributions to sports development and support of CityU was completed at a ceremony held on 19 January. Mr Hu is a renowned sports advocate in Hong Kong and the mainland, who has dedicated himself to promoting a sporting culture and making notable contributions to a wide range of sports and associations. Officiating guests at the ceremony included Mr Leung Chun-ying, Council Chairman, and Professor Way Kuo, University President.

City Literary Awards
CityU will be hosting the City Literary Awards, a writing competition accepting entries until 29 January. Adopting the theme of "Man and Nature", entries are welcomed under the genres of prose, short story, poetry, or art and cultural criticism. The fifth City Literary Awards provides encouragement to young Chinese writers from Hong Kong and Macau and strengthens cultural exchange between the two places. More details can be found at http://www.ncm2.xyz/ctspc/literature.
