Project Flame
Project Flame is a new cross-disciplinary and cross-departmental activity at CityU that will foster the ideas and impact of social innovation and social entrepreneurship on campus involving the joint efforts of faculty and students. Faculty from 17 academic departments at CityU, the Dean of Students, and colleagues from the Student Development Services are involved. Professor Linda Wong Lai Yeuk-lin from CityU's Department of Public and Social Administration is the director of the project. Project Flame kicks off with a series of talks called "Social Entrepreneurs in Residence at CityU" on 14–15 September, featuring Dr Andreas Heinecke, founder of Dialogue in the Dark, and Dr Tse Ka-kui, founder of the Social Entrepreneurship Forum and CEO of Education for Good. Dr Heinecke and Ms Ada Wong Ying-kay, Convener of Make a Difference and The Good Lab, will speak at an open forum, "Introduction to Social Innovation and the Community," on 17 September. Five local social enterprises will exhibit their products and share their experiences at the Social Enterprise Fair 2012 on 17–18 September. For more details, please visit here.

 

Software development
The Centre for System Informatics Engineering (CSIE) at CityU has recently received 20 sets LabVIEW Core Development software and associated toolkits valued at HK$2.3 million from National Instruments. The software has been installed in the CSIE laboratory and will be widely used by students in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management for academic and research purposes. An appreciation ceremony will be held on 7 September to express CityU's gratitude to the donor. Professor Lu Jian, Dean of College of Science and Engineering at CityU, and Professor Tsui Kwok-leung, Head of Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, will be present at the ceremony.

 

Forthcoming talks
Professor Thomas Sargent, 2011 Nobel Laureate in Economics and Professor of Economics at New York University, will deliver a talk "U.S. then, Europe now" on 28 September. The event is organised by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and Technology). In addition, Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics at CityU, will deliver the next in the President's Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia. Professor Zhang, one of CityU's10 academicians, will discuss the reversal of utopia and dystopia and look to the future when utopia may give expression again to human desires for a better way of life. His talk is titled "In Search of a Land of Happiness: Utopia and Its Discontents" and will take place on 9 October.

 

New appointment
Professor Brian K Boyd has been appointed as Chair Professor of Strategic Management and Head of the Department of Management. He will assume duty on 21 September. Professor Boyd received his PhD from the University of Southern California and is currently a Professor at the W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University. His main research interests include corporate strategy, strategy implementation, executive compensation and international management.

 

Kudos
DynaCity Technology (HK) Ltd, a company set up by Professor Sun Dong of the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and Mr Chris Chan Kin-leung, an alumnus from the department, have received an award in the category of Machinery and Machine Tools Design in the 2012 Hong Kong Awards for Industry. DynaCity Technology (HK) Limited, established by Professor Sun in 2003, is located in the Hong Kong Science Park.

Eason Tsang Ka-wai, a Year 3 student in the School of Creative Media, won the Yellow Pencil Award from the D&AD Student Awards organised by Design and Art Direction, a British educational charity promoting excellence in design and advertising. His winning photo series called "Landmark" contains upshot images of Hong Kong buildings.
