30th Anniversary events
A number of events will be held in April to mark the University’s 30th anniversary. More than 100 calligraphy artworks created by academicians and scholars from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China will be showcased at the Science and Art: Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition by Renowned Academicians. The participants are all leading scholars in their fields of study and also talented artists. The exhibition will be held at the Singing Waves Gallery and the Run Run Shaw Library through 11 May. The aim of the exhibition, which was proposed by Professor Way Kuo, University President, is to narrow the gap between traditional culture and modern-day students and promote interest in broadening their knowledge, improving artistic taste and cultivating cultural appreciation.

The 9th IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems will take place from 13 to 16 April, providing researchers with the opportunity to share their most recent research results in this dynamic field. The CityU 3rd Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony on 16 April honours alumni for their remarkable personal achievements and significant contributions to their professions/careers, the University and the community. The student-initiated 30th Anniversary Joint Concert performed by the CityU Philharmonic Orchestra, CityU Chinese Orchestra and CityU Choir will take place on 6 April at City Hall.

The Asian Experimental Video Festival x Leung Chi Wo Exhibition focuses on presenting experimental videos from Asia (Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan), and creates a platform for cultural exchange among Asian cities. The featured artist Mr Leung Chi-wo, Assistant Professor in the School of Creative Media, will display new works. He is considered to be one of Hong Kong’s leading visual artists with numerous awards and growing international recognition. The Video Festival runs from 1 to 4 April and “Leung Chi Wo: I don’t really know sometimes if it’s because of culture” runs from 24 April to 18 May, both to be held at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre.

In addition, the Literature: CityU Year of Global Literary Expression, a world-class series of presentations by award-winning writers, educational sessions for students, creative writing workshops, and an exhibition of CityU’s Hong Kong Cultural Atlas project, kicks off with the CityU Literary Festival & Literary Contest from 25 April to 15 May.

On a more sporting note, the Global Marathon-Gyeongju Cherry Marathon 2014 will see a team of CityU students, staff and alumni reaching out beyond campus and beyond Hong Kong to promote fitness and a more healthy lifestyle within the University community as CityU runners compete in one of South Korea’s major long-distance running events, to be held in Gyeongju on 5 April.

International ICT Expo
The 16 innovative projects that CityU will reveal at the International ICT Expo organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will showcase our outstanding research on energy saving, information and communications with high application value. The Expo takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13 to 16 April.

President's Lecture Series
The mid to late 20th century saw a dramatic transformation in the distribution of wealth across many societies. This was associated with urbanisation and rising levels of home ownership. From the vantage point of the early 21st century, how should we understand the social, economic and political dimensions of these developments? Professor Ray Forrest, Chair Professor of Housing and Urban Studies and Head of the Department of Public Policy, will deliver his talk titled “Equity and Inequity: exploring urban residential wealth” at the next President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia, on 16 April. Professor Forrest received his PhD from the University of Bristol. His research focuses on the sociology and political economy of the contemporary city; housing markets and the macro economy; housing policy and social inequality. He is an Academician of the UK Academy of Social Sciences and Professor Emeritus at Bristol University.

Distinguished Lectures
Professor Noriko Mizuta, Chancellor of Josai University Educational Corporation, will deliver a City University Distinguished Lecture titled “The Yamambas’ Long Life: The Cultural Dynamics of the Aging Society” on 9 April.

Professor Arden L. Bement Jr, David A. Ross Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Nuclear Engineering, Chief Global Affairs Of­ficer Emeritus and Inaugural Director Emeritus, Global Policy Research Institute, Purdue University, will deliver a talk titled “The Roles of Higher Education in Innovation and Globalization” on 24 April.

Peru Cultural Study Tour exhibition
Participants on a 16-day study tour to Peru organised by the Department of Asian and International Studies earlier this year will share their experiences at an exhibition titled “Amazing Peru: the Other Side of the World” from 3 to 21 April.

Career Fair
The CityU Career Fair organised by the Career and Internship Office serves as a platform for students to gain market information and job opportunities from industry professionals and company representatives. The event, from 9 to 10 April, is also an excellent opportunity for students to explore their future career options and career paths.
