New appointment
Professor Yan Hong, Chair Professor of Computer Engineering, has been appointed to the position of Dean of the College of Science and Engineering with effect from 1 May 2015. Professor Yan received his doctoral degree from Yale University and is a distinguished scholar in the areas of image processing, pattern recognition and bioinformatics. He is currently an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. As Dean, Professor Yan will provide academic leadership and foster a collegial ambiance that will enable faculty, staff and students to pursue academic excellence.

 

Re-appointment
Professor Brian Boyd has been re-appointed as Head of the Department of Management for the period 1 August 2015 to 31 July 2018.

 

Sustainability workshop
An intensive workshop on membrane-based desalination technology in Hong Kong will be held between 28 and 30 May at CityU. The event has been organised by the School of Energy and Environment. For more information, click here.

 

Film festival
The Asian Experimental Video Festival organised by the School of Creative Media will be held from 5 to 10 May at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. Themed "Over View", the festival will present unique culture and natural scenery of eight countries and regions, such as the hardship of living suffered by females in Egypt and young people in Mali, as well as spectacular scenery seen in Australia, Europe and the US. Kudos
Professor Kenneth Lo Kam-wing of the Department of Biology and Chemistry has been awarded a Senior Research Fellowship by the Croucher Foundation for his pioneering research in inorganic chemistry. His major research area is the utilisation of luminescent transition metal complexes as biomolecular probes and bioimaging reagents. His findings have provided a new perspective on the development of biological reagents for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. For more, click here.

A biotechnology company founded by Mr Eric Chen Zixiang and Dr Chen Xueping, both alumni, was awarded the Grand Prix at the 43th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. The company Vitargent (International) Biotechnology Limited won the award for the application of technology developed by Professor Cheng Shuk Han from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at CityU and her research team. The technology helps to improve the safety of food and daily necessities by rapidly testing for toxins through the use of zebrafish embryos. For more, click here.

The School of Creative Media (SCM) won the Award for Arts Promotion; Dr Cédric Maridet of SCM won Artist of the Year (Media Arts); and SCM alumnus Mr Kenny Wong Chi-chuen won the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council on 24 April. Yeung Carman and Cacin Wong Po-ying, both Year 4 students of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, received the prestigious Drury Medal (for the best entry in the under-25 category) and collected £2,500 in prize money at the Young Structural Engineers' International Design Competition. Their innovative design of a shelter for accommodation following a natural disaster outshone 160 entries from around the world. For more, click here.

Dr Lam Miu-ling, Assistant Professor, Dr Chen Ting-hsuan, Assistant Professor, and Mr Chen Bin, Research Associate at the School of Creative Media, won the Best Conference Poster Award for a paper titled "Optimized Topographical Labeling for Identification of Unknown Nucleic Acids" in the 10th IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems.

Dr Maria Francesch, Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Policy, has received the prestigious Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Germany) research grant worth HK$450,000 in support of her project titled "Transnational Climate Change Networks: New Forms of Authority or Mobilization Mechanisms to Secure Consent?" The project is a cross-disciplinary environmental governance study in collaboration with academics from Germany, Singapore, the UK, and the US.

CityU won the men's overall championship and the women's overall 1st runner-up in the 2014-2015 annual intervarsity sports competitions organised by The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK). For the second year running, Grace Lau Mo-sheung, a Year 3 student in the School of Creative Media who is ranked 20th in the world in female individual Karate Kata, was named USFHK Sportswoman of the Year.
