Congregation 2015

More than 10,000 awards ranging from PhDs to associate degrees will be conferred on CityU students at the 2015 Congregation from 10 to 13 and 16 to 17 November. In addition, four distinguished persons will receive honorary doctoral degrees on 20 November in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society.  The recipients will be Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS, JP, Mr Bruce Cheng, Professor Herbert Gleiter and Mr David Harilela.



Symposium on Nanomaterials

The topic for this symposium, which is held in honour of Professor Herbert Gleiter, a recipient of an Honorary Doctoral Degree this year from CityU, is an evaluation of nanomaterials. Nine world-class professors from around the world will share their research findings in this area with the wider scientific community. Professor Way Kuo, President of the University, will give the opening address for the Symposium, which will take place on 19 November in the Connie Fan Multi-media Conference Room.



InnoCarnival 2015

Projects ranging from creative media innovations to new apps and wearable technology will be featured at CityU’s booth at InnoCarnival 2015 from 31 October to 8 November The event is organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government and will take place at Hong Kong Science Park, Shatin. Professor Michael Lam Hon-wah of the Department of Biology and Chemistry will deliver a talk titled “Some New Developments in Chemo-/Biosensing Technologies for Food Surveillance” at a seminar during InnoCarnival on 4 November 2015. Institute for Advanced Study

An inauguration ceremony for the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) will be held on 22 November. With an interdisciplinary, campus-wide, international focus on One Health, Digital Society and Smart City, IAS will provide our faculty and students with an exciting environment in which to advance their work. Officiating guests will include: Professor Way Kuo, CityU President and Academician of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE); Professor Philippe G Ciarlet, Academician of the French Academy of Sciences; Professor Herbert Gleiter, Academician of the German National Academy of Sciences; Professor Serge Haroche, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Academician of the French Academy of Sciences; Professor Jean-Marie Lehn, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Academician of the French Academy of Sciences; Professor Liu Chain-Tsuan, Academician of US NAE; Professor Stephen Smale, Fields Medalist, Wolf Prize Recipient and Academician of the US National Academy of Sciences; and Professor David Yao, Academician of US NAE.



Innopreneurship Ecosystem

The new CityU Innopreneurship Ecosystem will strengthen the culture of innovation and the spirit of entrepreneurship among students and alumni. There will be launching ceremony on 23 November. The officiating guests will include Mr Herman Hu, Council Chairman, Professor Way Kuo, President, Professor Jian Lu, Vice-President (Research and Technology), Professor Gary Feng Gang, Associate Provost, Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Chairman of CityU Enterprises Limited, and Mr Peter Mok, Head of Incubation Programmes, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks.



France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Serge Haroche of the Collège de France and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2012 will give a talk titled “Fifty Years of Revolutions in Laser Physics” on 18 November. For more information, click here.



Contemporary Code: Artistic Research

An exhibition focusing on artistic research at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) will feature 20 projects ranging from growth in architecture and radio jumpers to robotic technology and dancing authors to a film shown at the Viennale 2014. The event, from 30 October to 29 November 2015, has been organised by the School of Creative Media (SCM) in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The event is titled “Contemporary Code – Artistic Research”.



Hong Kong Writers Talk Series

Ms Tang Siu-wa, a writer and heritage researcher, will deliver a talk on “Reality and Illusion – Debate between Privacy and Openness of Literature” for the Hong Kong Writers Talk Series on 9 November. In the talk, Ms Tang will share her thoughts on the contradictory concepts of reality and illusion as well as privacy and openness that often appear as a motif in literature. Kudos

A team of 14 students from the Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH), Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) and Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering won a gold medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Giant Jamboree Competition 2015 in the US with their novel gene-based remedy to tackle lactose intolerance, a common digestive problem where the human body is unable to digest lactose, a type of milk sugar. It was the second year running that CityU had won the Gold Medal. The team's advisers were Dr Richard Kong Yuen-chong, Associate Professor in BCH, Dr David Chiu Sung-kay, Assistant Professor in BMS, and Dr Terrence Lau Chi-kong, Assistant Professor in BMS.

Three students majoring in Civil and Structural Engineering won the Overseas Specially Invited Outstanding Prize at the 9th National College Students Structural Design Competition on 18 October 2015. Dai Peng, Li Yang and Li Yunzhu, all final-year students, competed with 330 civil engineering students from 109 universities in the final competition in Kunming. 

Mr Rigsby Chi Fung-cheung, a 2015 graduate of the BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, under the supervision of Dr Sarana Nutanong, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, won the Second Runner-up prize in the “Final Year Project Competition 2014-2015” organised by the IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter; the Third Prize in the “Challenge Cup 2015 – Hong Kong University Students Extra-Curriculum Technology Contest” under the category of Information Technology; and the Merit Award in “Crossover 2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition (Hong Kong SAR Region)”.
