Mainland policies and internationalisation strategy
In order to prepare for CityU's expanding mainland activities and advancement in internationalisation, the University established a Steering Committee on Mainland China Policies and a Committee on Internationalisation Strategy, in October 2004 and January 2005, respectively, both led by Professor H K Chang, President.

The Steering Committee on Mainland China Policies is to decide on the directions for outreach development and to formulate strategic plans for academic collaborative activities with higher education institutions and government agencies on the mainland. It has met twice and discussed CityU's general development on the mainland and the recruitment of mainland students. Members of the Committee include Professor Y S Wong, Vice-President (Administration), Mr James Ng, Executive Director of CityU Extension, Professor Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, Professor L K Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Business (FB), Professor C H Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), and Professor Cheng Pei-kai, Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre.

The recently established Committee on Internationalisation Strategy aims to respond to the University Grants Committeeˇs call for the internationalisation of higher education and the need to strengthen the Universityˇs international ties in academic and student exchange activities, and to promote internationalisation of the student body on campus. The Committee, comprising Professor David Tong, Deputy President; Professor Edmond Ko, Vice-President (Undergraduate Education) and Dean of Students; Professor L K Chan, FB Dean; Professor Ian Holliday, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Professor C H Chan, FSE Dean; Professor James Moy, Dean of the School of Creative Media; Professor Peter Malanczuk, Dean of the School of Law; and Professor Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, will hold its first meeting at the end of February.

Largest RGC grant
CityU has received three group project grants totaling HK$11.04m, the largest amount among the UGC-funded institutions for the 200405 round of the Research Grants Councilˇs (RGC) Central Allocation Fund (CAF). The amount of funding for the three projects accounts for 42.5% of the total CAF of HK$26m, testifying to the Universityˇs strengths in applied research and its leadership in collaborative projects.
The three awarded proposals are group research projects jointly conducted with other UGC-funded institutions. The three projects, all in the area of physics and materials science, are headed respectively, by researchers from CityU's Department of Physics and Materials Science: Dr Igor Bello, Associate Professor, Professor Paul Chu, Professor (Chair) of Materials Engineering, and Professor S T Lee, Professor (Chair) of Materials Science.

First Alumni Club on the mainland
In January, the University established the CityU Beijing Alumni Club, the first alumni club on the mainland, to offer an opportunity for CityU alumni to connect and share experiences, as well as to strengthen the Universityˇs support network and help promote its presence and image on the mainland. The launch of the Club was witnessed by 30 CityU alumni and 30 scholars who have taught or worked at CityU and exchange students at the "Friends of CityU" dinner in Beijing on 28 January.
From 2629 January, Professor H K Chang led a six-member delegation comprising staff responsible for external relations and business to Beijing. The delegation met officials from the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, the Ministry of Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University and several media organizations.

Through fostering closer ties with Government departments, higher educational institutions, alumni and the media, the visit further promotes the Universityˇs image on the mainland and opens up opportunities for further collaboration.
