Consultations on proposed 4-year degree structure
A series of forums and discussions have set in motion University-wide consultations on the proposed four-year normative degree structure, which Senate approved at its meeting on 14 March. Following staff and student forums on 1 and 9 March, respectively, the CityU community has been invited to express their views through three on-line surveys—for staff, students and alumni. In addition, focus groups have been conducted with secondary school students, parents, principals and teachers. In-depth interviews and self-administered questionnaires for professional bodies and employers are in the pipeline. After collecting data from the various CityU stakeholders, the Action Team for the Planning for the 4-year Degree will consider all the views and options.

 

CityU & Peking U graduate schools sign collaboration agreement
CityU's School of Graduate Studies signed an agreement on
20 March with Shenzhen Graduate School at Peking University to launch the Joint Research Student Supervision Scheme, which aims at nurturing high-calibre graduates in electronic and information engineering in Shenzhen. The agreement was signed by Professor Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at CityU, and Professor Lin Junjing, Dean of the Shenzhen Graduate School at Peking University.

 

Sharp increase in funding for scholarships
CityU received $15 million in contributions and donations for scholarships this year, a 50% increase on last year. On 16 March, the University presented outstanding CityU students with 704 awards from 194 award schemes at the Scholarship and Prize Presentation Ceremony.The award schemes have been set up by a wide spectrum of professional bodies, corporations and philanthropists in Hong Kong, as well as by CityU departments, faculties, schools and alumni associations.

 

New applied research funding nears $10m mark
Nine applied research projects have secured $7.04m in internal funds from CityU's Applied Research Grant (ARG) 200506.?The projects, based in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Electronic Engineering, Department of Information Systems, Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, and Department of Physics and Materials Science, have attracted a further $2.77m in industrial sponsorship. ARG is part of the University's efforts to foster applied research and strengthen links with industry. It supports projects up to $1.5m with a range of 10% to 50% in industrial sponsorship.


Distinguished linguist launches Halliday Centre
As society looks increasingly to the application of linguistics to gain insight into areas such as education, computer science and policy making, the eminent linguist Professor M A K Halliday will give a talk on how the scientific study of language can help solve communication problems. His talk, entitled "Working with Meaning: Towards an Appliable Linguistics", marks the official launch of the Halliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies (HCLS).

Professor Halliday is Visiting Professor in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics at CityU and an adviser to HCLS. The lecture will take place at the Wei Hing Theatre on 26 March and will kick off a symposium on "Meaning in Context: Implementing Intelligent Applications of Language Studies".

 

Teachers Update Course 2006
CityU is committed to strengthening ties with the community and the secondary school sector through the annual Teachers Update Course (TUC), a series of stimulating classes geared to the real needs of Hong Kong's secondary school teachers. The theme for TUC 2006 is "Developing Reflective Professionals — Embracing Change" and will focus on Globalization and Secondary School Education; Embracing Change in Teaching and Learning; Promoting Teachers' Personal Development; Supporting Curriculum Change; Understanding Media Culture and Technology; and Updating Subject Knowledge.

 

Staff rep joins Committee for new President
Dr John Tse Wing-ling, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Social Studies, has been elected to the Search Committee for the new President.


Interactive learning with PDAs
The University supports moves on campus that enhance teaching and learning through technology, and wireless PDAs in particular have the potential to transform a conventional class into a more dynamic and interactive learning space. In pursuit of this idea, the Faculty of Business will hold a seminar entitled "Interactive Learning with PDAs: Strategies, Implementation and Results" to share its experiences using wireless PDA technology to boost interactive learning in larger classes. There will be two sessions: an overview of the project and a hands-on session in which participants try out the technology. The seminar will take place on 28 March.

 

President's dialogue with student leaders
Professor H K Chang, CityU President, will share his views and experiences on leadership with leaders of various student societies on campus, with particular focus on the qualities of a student leader. The activity is organized by Student Development Services and will be held on 27 March.

 

Kudos
Vinci Chang Wan-si, a student in the Department of Electronic Engineering, took first prize in the IEEE Hong Kong Section 2005 (Undergraduate) Student Paper Contest for her research into radio frequency identification (RFID). The same paper won Ms Chang Best Paper Awards in August and November last year.
