| CityU surges
up international rankings
The findings of a major international survey that ranks the world's most
prestigious universities confirm that CityU has established itself as
an internationally-recognized centre for both teaching and research. CityU
has climbed 24 places from 178th last year to 154th this year, according
to the 2006 World University Rankings published by the UK's Times
Higher Education Supplement. CityU is one of the four universities
in Hong Kong listed among the world's top 200, and is ranked 8th in the
Greater China region, covering mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The results indicate sustained improvement since the University
jumped from 198th to 178th place in the same ranking exercise in 2005,
having broken into the top 200 the previous year.

| Applied
research showcased at major hi-tech fairs
Applied research projects nurtured by academics from
CityU have been exhibited at two major hi-tech fairs, offering the University
the opportunity to showcase its strengths. Projects, and the Principle
Investigators, at the 8th China Hi-Tech Fair held at the Shenzhen Exhibition
Hall from 12 until 17 October included, among others, Advanced Coating,
Dr Lawrence Li Kwok-yan, Associate Professor, Department
of Manufacturing and Engineering and Engineering Management; Family-School
SMS Solution, Dr Li Qing, Associate Professor, Department
of Computer Science; Anti-phishing System, Dr Liu Wenyin,
Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science; Computer-assisted
Simulation System for Orthognathic Surgery, Professor (Chair)
Horace Ip Ho-shing, Department of Computer Science; Drug Screening
and Toxicity Testing by Zebra Fish, Dr Cheng Shuk-han,
Associate Professor, Department of Biology and Chemistry.
Meanwhile, five projects from the Department of Electronic
Engineering were showcased at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2006, Asia's
largest and the world's second largest electronics show. This exhibition
underlines CityU's dynamic role in developing applied research for industry
in the region. The projects, and Principle Investigators, included, among
others, the Automated Facial Animation System for Digital Entertainment,
and the English E-Learning with Virtual Teachers, both by Professor
(Chair) Hong Yan; the Centre for Electronic Packaging and Assemblies,
Failure Analysis and Reliability Engineering, Professor (Chair)
Archie Chan Yan-cheong; Green Chemistry for Industry, Prof Chan
and Professor Lau Tai-chu, of the Department of Biology
and Chemistry; and the ZigBee Wireless Automation System, Dr Tsang
Kim-fung, Associate Professor. The Fair was organized by the
Hong Kong Trade Development Council from 13 to 16 October at the Hong
Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

| Long Service Staff Award
Ceremony
The Human Resources Office will be organizing the Long
Service Staff Award Ceremony 2006 to honour those staff members who have
served the University for over 10 years. Awards will be presented to 283
members of staff, including Professor H K Chang, University
President, and other members of senior management, who have served for
10, 15 and 20 years by University Day, which falls on 22 October. The
presentation ceremony will take place on 1 November at the Wei Hing Theatre.

| Conference on regional
economic growth
CityU is dedicated to developing applied technologies
that can assist in the economic growth of the region, and in this role
it will host the annual conference of the Hong Kong Institution of Science
under the theme "Applied science for regional growth". The Guest
of Honour will be Dr Sarah Liao Sau-tung, Secretary of
the Environment, Transport and Works. The speakers include Professor
(Chair) Johnny Chan Chung-leung of CityU's Department of Physics
and Materials Science who will discuss air pollution in the Pearl River
Delta, and experts from industry and other local universities. The conference
will take place on 28 October at the Wei Hing Theatre.

| CityU Banquet
The annual CityU Banquet, organized by the Students'
Union, builds up a strong sense of belonging to the University. Honoured
guests at this year's event, which will take place on 3 November, include
Mr Chung Shui-ming, Council Chairman; Council members;
Professor H K Chang, University President; and members
of the senior management.

| International film festival
The University maintains strong links with the
international film industry via the School of Creative Media and is strongly
committed to creating a vibrant international learning and cultural environment
on campus. In this spirit, the 13th European Film Festival will be held
on campus, featuring award-winning films from Austria, Belgium, the Czech
Republic, Hungary and the Netherlands. Screenings will take place in the
School of Creative Media between 11 October and 10 November.

| Kudos
The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at the Faculty
of Law, Monash University, Australia, has awarded Mr C Raj Kumar,
Assistant Professor in the School of Law, the Holding Redlich Distinguished
Visiting Fellowship this year. This Fellowship is designed to attract
high-profile international and domestic human rights scholars to undertake
research and teaching at the Castan Centre each year as a Distinguished
Visiting Fellow.
