City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is actively expanding its regional cooperation, strengthening its connections with renowned institutions in the region to promote mutual collaboration in academics, research, and innovation. A high-level delegation led by Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President, visited several top universities and key enterprises in Vietnam in mid-September, exploring potential collaboration in education and research and enhancing CityUHK’s connections and partnerships in Vietnam.

The CityUHK delegation visited Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM), VinUniversity Hanoi (VinUni) and Eastern International University (EIU) to explore opportunities for academic exchanges and research collaboration, in keeping with our reputation as the Most International University in the World by Times Higher Education in 2024.

During the visit to VNUHCM, the delegation met with Professor Vu Hai Quan, Chancellor of the University. The two institutions discussed an array of topics in areas of mutual interest, including the development of artificial intelligence, information technology, fintech, biotechnology and medical research, and explored further collaboration opportunities. President Boey supported the aim of the two institutions to strengthen ties and cooperation to nurture the next generation of global leaders together.

Following the visit to VNUHCM, the delegation visited VinUni and EIU, meeting the senior management of the two universities to discuss academic collaboration, including research initiatives, joint programmes, and student and faculty exchange opportunities. VinUniversity is a private, not-for-profit university established by Vingroup – the largest private conglomerate in Vietnam.

The CityUHK delegation also engaged with key local enterprises, such as Becamex, a leading industrial and urban real estate company in Vietnam; Sunwah Group, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate with business engaging in Vietnam; and VinFast, the first Vietnamese electric car brand founded by Vingroup. CityUHK discussed with these groups topics such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, sustainable development and start-up incubation, and explored potential collaboration in education, research and talent training.

President Boey described the visit to Vietnam as fruitful and expressed hope for future collaboration with other prominent and forward-looking Vietnamese companies and universities to offer more chances for CityUHK students to learn at renowned international companies and universities.

He stated, “Vietnam is an important partner country in the Belt and Road Initiative. By strengthening academic and cultural exchanges, CityUHK will establish and enhance partnerships with renowned local enterprises and universities to promote innovative research and cultivate more outstanding talent with an international perspective, thereby contributing to consolidating Hong Kong’s status as an international education hub.”

The CityUHK delegation to Vietnam included Professor Yue Chee Yoon, Dean of Graduate Studies; Professor Wang Jianping, Dean of College of Computing; Ms Pheck Choo Ng, Director of the Office of the President; and Professor LY Thuc Hue, Department of Chemistry.
