Students win big again

Michael Woloschuk

For the second straight year, six Department of Mathematics undergraduates have taken home top awards at the China Undergraduate Mathematics Contest in Modeling.

Students Eva Lee, Ken Leung, and Sophy Mak won first prize for their work on a mathematical modeling problem to determine the size and shape of blood vessels. The students, who outclassed competitors from such prestigious institutions as Peking University, were required to work out the problem within 72 hours.

"The students are very hard working, independent and mature - they have good imaginations and they can think creatively," said Dr Jonathan Wylie, who guided and supervised the students with his Department of Mathematics colleague, Dr Benny Hon. "This proves that the quality of our students is equal to those students from prestigious mainland institutions."

The annual contest, organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, attracted 3,800 team entrants from top universities throughout China. The CityU candidates entered the contest in two teams. The other team, comprising of students Sam Chi Ngai, Wang Zhong Ming and Lin Li Ming, took second prize at the contest.

The contest is considered a very important event because it encourages students to work hard and gain experience in a real-life environment.
