CityU students receive Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarships

Audrey Chung

Three CityU undergraduate students have been awarded prestigious Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarships for their outstanding academic results and active participation in extra-curricular activities and community services.

Final-year students Tracy Ho, Krista Ko and Ryan Mak were nominated by the Department of English and Communication, the Department of Marketing and the School of Law, respectively. There were 70 awardees in total from a shortlist of 200 candidates from the eight local higher institutions. Each student receives $20,000.

The awards testify that CityU’s whole-person education instills in young people a caring attitude, a commitment to society and professional knowledge.

Krista, majoring in Business Administration in China Business, made the Dean’s list in both semesters of the 2004-05 academic year. In the summer of 2005, she worked in Beijing on a summer internship programme organized by the Hong Kong Jockey Club during which she won a Best Learning Award.

“I think these achievements recognize my strengths and motivate me to strive for excellence,” Krista said. She has been volunteering for Caritas Hong Kong and St Clare’s Girls’ School's Zonta Z Club since 2000, helping both the elderly and people with learning difficulties.

Ryan, studying law, takes on board various extra-curricular activities on and off campus. In 2004-05, he was President of the Joint University English Debating Competition in Hong Kong; the External Director of CityU’s Mooting Club and an instructor in tort and contract law on the Supplemental Instruction Scheme at

CityU.

“I’d like to thank CityU for encouraging us to participate in extra-curricular activities because these opportunities help me work to my strengths. Staff at CityU gave me invaluable academic advice as well,” Ryan said.

Tracy, studying for a BA in Teaching English as a Second Language, also participates in extra-curricular activities. She belongs to the Hong Kong Chorus and the Hong Kong Volunteer Movement. In 2003, she was a voluntary English tutor for mainland children. She said that community service helped enhance her sense of social responsibility.

Three postgraduate students received Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships. Mr Chang Chor-ming, Ms Cheung Yuk-man and Mr Yang Shing-lung from the Department of Computer Science; the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics; and the Department of Electronic Engineering, respectively, were picked for the strategic possibilities of their research into the social, economic and technological development of Hong Kong.

The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund was established in April 1987 under the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Ordinance. The Fund’s Council offers annual scholarships to full-time students pursuing undergraduate studies and fellowships for postgraduate research.
