CityU inspires secondary school students through science and engineering projects

Regina Lau

Engineering (FSE) at City University of Hong Kong has again reached out to secondary school students this summer to enhance their interest and creativity in science and engineering.

Under the FSE's Project-based Outreach Programme, teams of students in Form Four or above conducted science and engineering-related study projects during the summer holidays. The projects were supervised by CityU's academic staff and secondary school teachers. The Faculty's students also participated by taking up the role of mentor to help the teams to complete their projects.

The Faculty's efforts demonstrate CityU's continuing dedication to producing young talents in science and engineering in Hong Kong.

A total of 56 students from eight secondary schools have formed 10 teams to take part in the outreach programme. After three months of hard work, the teams came to CityU's campus to make presentations on 23 September (Saturday).

The teams reported on their projects and shared their accomplishments in front of four adjudicators and other teams. The adjudicators included Ms Karen Sit Man, Assistant Curator of Hong Kong Space Museum; Professor Lilian Vrijmoed, CityU’s Dean of Student Learning; Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung, Associate Dean of FSE ; and Dr Alan Chan Hoi-sau, Associate Professor of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management.

Speaking at the event, Professor Chan Chi-hou, FSE Dean, said the programme provided a unique out-of-classroom learning experience for secondary school students by encouraging them to engage in a project that suits their interest. “I hope young people’s enthusiasm in pursuing higher education and a career in science and engineering would be enhanced as a result,” said Professor Chan.

One of the secondary school student participants, Lui Wing-chiu, from HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School, said that project provided a rich learning experience. Apart from technical skill, he has also learned the importance of asking the right questions in solving problems.

Student mentors also benefit from the programme. FSE student Ng Ka- sin said leading secondary school students to complete a project has given her the opportunity to hone her skills in organization and leadership. She has learned more computer skills as well.
