Members of the Shamshuipo District Council were invited to City University of Hong Kong to find out more about campus development, academic programmes and our excellence in applied research .

Led by Chairman of the District Council Mr Tam Kwok-kiu, the delegation visited the School of Creative Media and laboratories in the Department of Biology and Chemistry and Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management on 10 January. There was also a briefing on the latest campus developments.

“CityU aims to serve Hong Kong at large, but CityU is linked closely with the District and so we want to hear your opinion about CityU’s development,” said Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan , Vice President (Administration), in her welcome address to the visitors.

Under the guidance of Dr Wong Kam-wah, Assistant Professor in School of Creative Media, the delegates learned more about the facilities of the School and the work of the students.

The delegation visited the Greenhouse and the Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative Technology. Dr Lam Hon-wah, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, talked about research relevant to the protection and conservation of the red mangrove ecology and the marine environment and its impact on the coastal region of Hong Kong.

Professor (Chair) Michael Hung Yau-yan of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management briefed delegates on new technologies known as the ‘crystal sensor’ and ‘shearography’. They detect structural defects and unstable tiles in a more effective way.

Mr Arthur Leung Tat-yung, Director of the Campus Planning Office, then outlined CityU’s campus development. “Our development is one of the major plans for meeting the demands of the new 4-year degree structure, an internationalized education and an increase in student numbers,” he said.

The plan includes the new academic and administration building, the multi-media building, the student residence phases four and five, and the new Community College of CityU, all scheduled to be completed by 2012.

Mr Leung stressed that campus development took into consideration environmental concerns and we tried to minimize the impact on CityU’s neighbours.
