Researchers at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) are celebrating more success in multi-indicator ranking exercises.

The 2010 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has placed CityU 43rd in the world in the category of Engineering / Technology and Computer Sciences.

This performance represents a significant rise as CityU has been ranked in 51st–77th place in the same category by ARWU for the last three years.

In ARWU subject fields, CityU moved up from 52nd–75th to 45th in computer science. It also broke into the top 100 in mathematics, ranked 51st–76th.

The ARWU assessment is based on the number of times researchers are cited, the number of papers indexed and published in top journals and the total expenditure on engineering-related research.

Engineering is a niche area at CityU. We have an outstanding faculty and research team with seven professors in the College of Science and Engineering holding academician positions with some of the most prestigious research bodies in the world.

In addition, CityU ranked number one in Hong Kong in 2008 and 2009 for engineering research papers, according to a survey conducted by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan.

In terms of the overall ranking, CityU surged some 70 places and is now ranked in the top 320.

On hearing the news of the latest world rankings, Professor Way Kuo, University President, reinforced the message that CityU is committed to providing professional education and conducting problem-driven research and technology transfer.

“Under the guidance of the five-year Strategic Plan, CityU will continue to reinforce the integration of research and teaching and promote the development of other disciplines on the basis of our existing strengths in order to contribute to Hong Kong, mainland China and beyond,” he said.
