A number of members of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) community have been named in the 2017 Honours List in recognition of their significant contributions to Hong Kong or for their dedicated public and community service.

Former Council member Dr Henry Cheng Kar-shun has been awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM) for his dedication to education and community service. As a successful entrepreneur committed to promoting a caring community, he has devoted a significant amount of effort to poverty alleviation, and given generous support to nurturing talented leaders for the future as well as for academic development and research. 

CityU alumnus The Honourable Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung has been awarded the GBM in recognition of his distinguished public service to the Government and the Hong Kong community, particularly in his capacity as the Secretary for Justice between 2012 and 2017. 

Dr Simon Ip Sik-on, a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from CityU in 2009, has been awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) in recognition of his long and distinguished public and community service, in particular his significant contributions to the Hong Kong Jockey Club and for promoting the development of equestrian sport in Hong Kong.

Mr Lau Ming-wai, current Council member and Honorary Fellow of CityU, has been awarded the GBS in recognition of his distinguished public service, particularly for promoting technological development and steering the work of the Commission on Youth and the Ocean Park Corporation.

Another former Council member Mr Lau Ping-cheung has been awarded the GBS in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the development of the construction, real estate and infrastructure sectors in Hong Kong. Mr Lau has been dedicated to promoting the professional services sector over the years and participated actively on various boards, committees and public bodies.

Former Council Chairman Mr David Sun Tak-kei has been awarded the GBS in recognition of his committed service to the Government, particularly in his capacity as the Director of Audit between 2012 and 2017.  He has made exemplary contributions to leading the department in the provision of independent, professional and quality audit services.

Mr Chan Ka-kui, Honorary Fellow, current Court member, former Council member and CityU alumnus, has been awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) for his long and distinguished service to the community. He has made significant contributions to the construction industry, particularly in human resources training and development.

Mr Rock Chen Chung-nin, former Court member, has been awarded the SBS for his distinguished and long-standing public service, particularly his significant contributions to and devoted efforts in strengthening the corporate governance for the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority and enhancing the quality and sustainability of its services.

Current Council Chairman Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming has been awarded the SBS for his distinguished public and community service, particularly his significant contributions to the development of the higher education sector through his service to Council and Court business at various universities, as well as the promotion of sport in Hong Kong.

Ms Stella Lau Kun Lai-kuen, Honorary Fellow and former Council member, has been awarded the SBS for her distinguished public service, particularly her valuable contributions to the promotion of interests and well-being of women in Hong Kong.

Alumna Dr Christine Loh Kung-wai has been awarded the SBS for her distinguished and dedicated service to the Government and the Hong Kong community, particularly in her capacity as the Under Secretary for the Environment. She has made valuable contributions in the formulation and implementation of policies on environmental issues.

Dr Yeung Kin-man, a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from CityU in 2016, has been awarded the SBS for his distinguished public and community service, and his dedication to university education, particularly his significant contributions and inspiration to the development of innovation and technology industries in Hong Kong.

Ms Shirley Chan Suk-ling, Honorary Fellow and former Council member, has been awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) for her long and meritorious contributions to public service, particularly in representing the industrial and business sectors and fostering the development of the apparel industry.

Mr Andrew Fung Hau-chung, current External member of the Council’s sub-committee, has been awarded the BBS for his dedicated and meritorious public and community service, particularly his invaluable contributions to the protection of the interests of employees and the work of the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund Board.

Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, alumnus, has been awarded the BBS for his meritorious public and community service, particularly his contributions to the industrial development of Hong Kong and the promotion of offender rehabilitation and equestrian sport for youth.

CityU alumnus Mr Chan Yin-chiu has been awarded the Hong Kong ICAC Medal for Meritorious Service for his exemplary and devoted service in the ICAC. He has served in the Commission for over 35 years.?

Alumna Ms Peggy Chan Shui-ping has been awarded the Medal of Honour (MH) for her outstanding and dedicated service in the Judiciary. Another alumna Dr Sanly Kam Shau-wan has been awarded the MH for her valuable contributions to the promotion of quality kindergarten education. Alumnus Mr Iu Ting-kwok has been awarded the MH for his dedicated public and community service, particularly his contributions to the development and promotion of mediation in Hong Kong. 

In addition, Professor Gu Minkang from the School of Law, Dr Jennifer Ng Chui-yiu, Court member and alumna, and alumni Dr Jason Chan Kai-yue, Mr Cary Chan Wing-hong and Mr Kwok Wai-keung have been appointed as Justices of the Peace.
