A memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at nurturing talent has been signed between City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Orbbec Co. Ltd (Orbbec).

The MOU was signed on 19 November by Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue, Provost at CityU, and Dr Howard Huang Yuanhao, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Orbbec, and an alumnus of CityU.

Orbbec will provide internship opportunities to CityU graduates studying programmes related to 3D sensing and setting up Orbbec scholarship for outstanding students studying in these fields. CityU and Orbbec will also further explore other collaboration opportunities.

Professor Jen said in his opening remarks: “CityU strives to develop partnerships and opportunities with various stakeholders and partners, provide opportunities and an environment for our students to develop their talents. I am pleased to witness CityU and Orbbec establish a closer collaboration and ties to leverage on each other’s strengths.”

“CityU has very good engineering foundation and I am very happy to come back and provide opportunities to all of you to apply the knowledge you learnt at CityU to real products,” Dr Huang said.

Guests from CityU attending the signing ceremony included Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research and Technology); Professor Dang Chuangyin, Acting Head of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management; Professor Pan Chin, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering; and Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations).

Guests from Orbbec were Dr Brad Liu Long, Vice-President; Ms Qi Ran, Vice-President of Administration and Public Relations; Dr Liu Xianzhuo, Head of Academy; and Ms Wei Ting, Senior Manager of Marketing.

At the alumnus sharing session titled “Meetup with the unicorn, Searching for light chasers” held after the signing ceremony, Dr Huang talked about his experience of starting a business, the future development of 3D sensing and the elements of career success.

“Choice is more important than effort,” he said. He advised people who wanted to build a successful career to “go to a region with more opportunities, target promising industries, find growth companies, and get a job that matches you.”

Dr Huang completed his PhD in the former Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management at CityU in 2009. He established Orbbec in 2013 with Dr Brad Liu, another CityU alumnus, and other computing and engineering experts. The only company in China capable of mass production of 3D sensors for consumers, Orbbec is a high-tech enterprise that integrates the development, production and sales of 3D sensing devices. It has become one of the leading providers of 3D sensing solutions in the world in just a few years.

It was included in the 2017 China Unicorn Enterprise Development Report compiled by the Ministry of Science and Technology. A “unicorn enterprise,” refers to start-ups with a valuation of more than US$1 billion.
