A HK$2 million donation from the Chu Wong Yim Fong Charitable Foundation will be used to set up a scholarship and bursary endowment fund for students of City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, thanked Mr Chu Hung-kwan, the founder and Chairman of the Foundation, and his family members for their generous contributions over the years.

“The Foundation has been rendering support to the University since 2014 and almost 100 undergraduates have benefited. The renewal of donations will provide significant resources for the long-term support of our students,” President Kuo said.

Guests attending the cheque presentation ceremony at CityU on 27 February included Mr Chu, Mrs Chu Tai Kan-yuet; and directors of the Foundation including Mr and Mrs Tony Chu, Mr Joshua Chu, Ms Edith Chu and Ms Susan Chu; Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations) of CityU; and Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations) of CityU.

Mr Tony Chu said the Foundation was founded in 2007 in commemoration of his grandmother for charitable initiatives in the mainland.

“Donating to CityU is our first local charity project. We highly appreciate CityU’s progress and the impact of our previous support, and so we are pleased to renew our donation to set up an endowment fund,” he said.

Two students who received sponsorship from the Foundation shared their thoughts at the ceremony. Leung Hei-man, a Year 4 student majoring in Asian and International Studies, said she would miss her days at CityU.

“CityU is a wonderful place where I meet people from different countries and backgrounds. The experience I’ve gained here will be very useful later in life. Thanks to the scholarship provided by the Chu Wong Yim Fong Charitable Foundation, I could plan to pursue further studies and volunteer overseas,” she said.

Angel Jim Kong-yim, a Year 3 student athlete majoring in Information Management, won the Women’s Championship in Taekwondo and the Most Valuable Player at the competitions organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China.

“Being a student athlete, I have to make double the effort to strike a balance between my studies and Taekwondo practice. I am grateful to have been supported by the Chu Wong Yim Fong Charitable Foundation. It allowed me to quit my part-time jobs and focus on my studies and training so that I could have a diversified pathway in the future,” she said.
