The public forum on "Direct Election for LegCo in 2008", held at the Purple Zone of the University Concourse on 25 November, aroused a heated discussion on political development of Hong Kong. A joint declaration on how to overcome the issue of the "digital divide", drafted by more than 300 university students from 189 nations/regions around the world, will be presented to about 50 heads of state in an upcoming world summit on global telecommunications, to be held in mid December. A CityU research student, Mr Steven Yang, was one of the young drafters.
With the Hong Kong community busy preparing for the District Election on 23 November, the City University of Hong Kong Press launched a timely new title—Political Consequences of Electoral Systems: The Hong Kong Proportional Representation System—on 18 November. The book outlines the development of electoral systems in Hong Kong.
City University's Division of Language Studies collaborated with the Society of Japanese Language Education Hong Kong to present the 6th International Symposium on Japanese Studies & Japanese Language Education, 8 and 9 November. The annual Symposium, including discussion of Japanese dissertations and the improvement of Japanese Education, takes place in a different country each year.
In his distinguished lecture on 10 November, Professor Andrew Yao Chi-chih, the recipient of CityU's Honorary Doctor of Science Degree at its 18th Congregation, treated his audience of over 220 faculty members and students to an interesting talk on the use of computer theory as an elegant and powerful tool for solving intellectual scientific challenges.
