CityU spearheads discovery and innovation in education at IFC exhibition

A special five-day exhibition at one of Hong Kong’s most visible landmarks is highlighting the professional education and problem-driven research promoted at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

The Discover & Innovate @ CityU Exhibition at the International Finance Centre Mall in Central from 4 to 8 May reveals how CityU contributes to the social and economic well-being of Hong Kong, the region and beyond.

Exhibits and installations include a fascinating 3D viewing experience at the iDome, a new hemispherical projection system that offers a glimpse of the cinema of the future, and a close look at how medaka fish injected with fusion genes reveal the presence of pollutants in coastal waters.

The exhibition also showcases advances by CityU researchers in communication technologies, 3D painting, artificial intelligence, sustainability research, and surveys on economic indicators.

“CityU has a young, dynamic, ambitious and highly talented campus community, one that is seeking to make a real difference,” said Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Pro-Chancellor, at the opening ceremony on 4 May. Although CityU is a relatively young university, founded just over 25 years ago, he said, it has already made significant contributions to learning and research in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

The Hon Leung Chun-ying, Council Chairman, said, “Discovery and innovation are crucial to Hong Kong’s future development. Hong Kong is not rich in natural resources and its future depends on creative people and innovative approaches to current and future challenges.” The exhibition exemplifies CityU’s emphasis on creating new knowledge, new perspectives and new solutions, he added.

In his address, Professor Way Kuo, University President, said, “We have been a university of the city of Hong Kong, in the city of Hong Kong and for the city of Hong Kong since our foundation.” He added that the six CityU colleges and schools have left their mark in the exhibition and that CityU will continue to educate young people to give them every opportunity for innovation and discovery, the twin curricular foci of CityU’s new 4-year degree structure.

In the University’s unique Discovery-enriched Curriculum, all undergraduates will have the opportunity to make an original discovery and prepare themselves to seize new opportunities during the course of their working careers.

Members of the public are invited to visit the exhibition from 6:00pm to 10:00pm on 4 May, and 10:00am to 10:00pm from 5 to 8 May.
