Instilling inspirational, interactive and innovative learning at the CityUHK experiential camp

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is dedicated to fostering inspirational, interactive and innovative learning for the younger generation. About 60 F.5 and F.6 students from over 30 secondary schools joined a two-day experiential camp organised by CityUHK from 23 to 24 July. A series of interactive workshops, experiential lectures and team-building activities were arranged for the participating students to get a taste of CityUHK’s academic environment and vibrant hostel experience.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) at CityUHK, said, "We are thrilled to welcome students from over 30 secondary schools to CityUHK for this unique experiential camp. This two-day event offers a valuable opportunity to broaden the students’ horizons and foster their personal growth. The participants can experience CityUHK's distinctive academic environment, engage in interactive workshops, and get insights into university life. We hope these young minds will explore their potential and gain clarity on their future choices through this event."

Professor Chan thanked the CityUHK students who served as group leaders and provided support at the experiential camp. “This is a win-win learning opportunity for both our students and the participants,” he said. “While CityUHK students get an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, the participants can hear it straight from our current students about the CityUHK learning experience and university life.”

Dr Wilson Lam Kin, Director of Student Residence Office, explained the key features of the unique hostel experience at CityUHK and gave an overview of the upcoming student residence at Whitehead, Ma On Shan, which is set to open in this September.

The experiential camp featured a diverse range of activities. Led by Professor Anna Hui Na-na, from the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the students participated in a personal growth workshop and learned about life planning skills. They also attended the CityUHK-Learning Classroom for Secondary School Students, where Professor Eloi Guarnieri, from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, explained the daily activities of a farm animal veterinarian, and Professor Raymond Wong Man-kong, from the Department of Accountancy, shared some applications of accounting in business.

The participants joined a workshop hosted by Professor Steve Wong Hang, Associate Vice-President (Community Engagement), where they learned how to build a simple antenna. They also explored the exhibition “A Passion for Silk: The Road from China to Europe” in the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery, which features exquisite artefacts from East to West, offering students an opportunity to understand how CityUHK merged art and technology in the exhibition. The students visited the teaching facilities of the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, including the Clinical Skills Laboratory, the Anatomy Teaching Laboratory and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, to witness first-hand how advanced equipment helps enhance the learning experience.
